Postman stole 18,000 letters

A THIEVING postman who stashed so much mail he had letters piled 12 centimetres deep throughout his flat has been jailed for eight months.

Instead of completing his deliveries in Toxteth, Adam Moore, 22, kept almost 18,000 items of post, Liverpool crown court heard.

Philip Astbury, prosecuting, told the court Moore caused 17,944 letters and parcels to be delayed.

The postman, who worked at the Copperas Hill mail centre, had opened 1,408 letters looking for cash and admitted stealing £500 over a six-week period.

Royal Mail started investigating Moore in April following complaints from his bosses, the court heard.

They saw him loading two mailbags into his car.

Investigators who arrived at Moore’s flat in Island Road, Garston, found the entire floor space was covered with piles of letters 12cm deep.

Mr Astbury said it was almost impossible to walk around his flat without stepping on the undelivered post.

It was even in the bathroom and investigators found post stashed in his car, some of which had been shredded.

It eventually needed a seven and a half tonne truck to collect the mail from his flat and take it back to the depot.

Moore, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to delaying the mail, theft and criminal damage.

Andrew Sinker, defending, said Moore had been in debt and was working late in a bar and then getting up early the next day to work in the post office.

He said: “Things got on top of him.

“It was his intention to put the mail back and then curiosity got the better of him and £500 was the only benefit to him.â€

A Merseyside postman who stole 18,000 items of mail and dumped them in his home has been jailed for eight months.

Instead of delivering the post, Adam Moore, 22, piled it in his flat on Ireland Avenue, Huyton - the pile was 12cm (4.7in) deep in his home.

Moore, now of Gosford Street, Toxteth, pleaded guilty to delaying, destroying and stealing postal packets.

The court heard he had opened 1,408 items, including greeting cards, and stolen a total of £500.

Prosecuting Philip Astbury said the team investigating found it almost impossible to enter the flat without stepping on mail.

The investigators also found two bin liners full of shredded mail along with driving licences, cheque books, pin numbers and unused credit cards.

Judge Ian Trigger said: "You had not intended to use those items but merely the loss of them shows the degree of chaos you caused to the intended recipients."

Moore had only been working for Royal Mail for five weeks when the incidents began in April. When he did not turn up for work two days consecutively investigators visited his home.

Defending, Andrew Sinker said Moore had taken the job as a postman because he was being chased by loan sharks.

Why did he only get 8 months?

Post by andy2007 »

Why did he get such a short sentence? :confused  :d'oh!

He was in a position of trust, which he betrayed. He damaged the reputation of all us honest Postmen and Postwomen. And he also stole from people's cards. :Sick :evil/mad

8 months is hardly much of a deterrant, is it? :hmmmm
He'll probably be out in 4! :evil/mad

The thing is did he tell his manager he was struggling to cope? Or was his manager one of those who he knew would probably not understand and wasn't approachable?

Still, a shitty thing to do.
