We already have a service where the customer can receive their parcels/packets before either 9am or 1pm and its called Special Delivery.
And this is the way this business thinks. If a customer wants their parcel at a specific time then they should pay extra for the privilege. If customers are prepared to do that, then we get busier driving round delivering more packets and we have less time spent walking round doing the loops. It could be a good thing.

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

RM have already moved some Parcelforce contracts over to postal delivery and i guess keep monitoring the workflow to see where they can use up any spare (?wannabeek wrote:I don't envisage RM going back to the old system of getting 2 posties to deliver the same streets, one with mail and one with anything bigger than that. Removing that wasted time and resources was the whole point of giving us vans. I think the opposite is more likely, myself - they'll give us bigger vans and then start to wonder why they still have Parcelforce on the books...

As we work out of long wheelbase Sprinters full to the roof on 10 hr days, I don't think you have any idea.wannabeek wrote:I don't envisage RM going back to the old system of getting 2 posties to deliver the same streets, one with mail and one with anything bigger than that. If RM were to split letters, large letters and d2ds off into separate duties and were to do away with 1st and 2nd class for letters and large letters then they could have most delivery staff doing just parcels. Once barcodes are on all parcels then delivery routes or at least order could be calculated by a computer, then people could be given a 1 hour window

I know it's not a sensible suggestion, but this is RM we are talking about and some very odd ideas have come from those behind the desks. I do remember when I started saying that I thought they'd get rid of the bikes and give us all vans instead. The reaction was the same as yours - 'but there's a big parcel van rammed to the roof, how are we expected to do all that as well??' Fast forward 5 years... here we are!eric the viking wrote:As we work out of long wheelbase Sprinters full to the roof on 10 hr days, I don't think you have any idea.wannabeek wrote:I don't envisage RM going back to the old system of getting 2 posties to deliver the same streets, one with mail and one with anything bigger than that. Letter/large letter/d2d would mean less duties, no waiting around for answers of doors, no filling out of 739s and if they could get the xms machines, in theory no indoor time, they'd be just pure outdoor dutiesA2B wrote:SpacePhoenix wrote:If RM were to split letters, large letters and d2ds off into separate duties and were to do away with 1st and 2nd class for letters and large letters then they could have most delivery staff doing just parcels. Even that, is virtually impossible to implement. Everyone on occasion will need to do loops in a different sequence so as to be able to make 1pm deadline for Special Delivery items. Now, if they change the SD specification to simply 'next day', then problem solved and such a delivery estimate system could work.Chewster wrote:I thought that the whole time specific thing was going to be that customers would be notified at a certain time with a message saying "postie is at such and such a place and will be at yours at such and such a time" rather than them actually getting to choose? I haven't had wtl this week though

Hmm. Could work if you only change your route because of specials but there are many more reasons than just that.
With one minor roadworks delaying one junction I may do a whole rural duty entirely in reverse. If there's a massive parcel for an address right near the last call of a 50 minute loop I would logically do it before I start. One rural I do has a Saturday collection box at a silly time so on that day only that village gets done last.
There are far too many unpredictable variables in this job for any of this nonsense, in my opinion.

Was once told by rep if you have to change loops or cut off and go over because of specials then they will be taken of you if requested. Managers just give you a blank stare if u say anything.

stirs usually ditact who our guys do there walks, and its always different ffrom day to day as the 1pm's need to be done or we get a smackwannabeek wrote:
If that is the case, I don't think this is likely to work well. From my experience, delivery routes are rarely done in the exact same order for a number of reasons, and also it gives the recipient something extra to complain about when the postie is earlier or later then the prediction.

this PDA tracking is going to see a huge rise in bullying about performance. Both performance vs georoute and daily variances in performance are going to be questioned by some very clueless RM managers (of which there are many) CWU needs to get an early grip on this as the signs of whats coming are obvious and worrying.
