Postal workers call off strike in Sheffield due to legal challenge

A postal workers’ strike which was set to affect deliveries in the south of Sheffield tomorrow has been called off.

The Communication Workers Union said the one-day industrial action at the Sheffield South Delivery Office was no longer going ahead.

Royal Mail had applied for a High Court injunction to prevent the strike, which would have affected the S7 and S8 postcodes. The injunction was set to be heard today.


Graham Clough, branch secretary of the CWU South Yorkshire and district branch, said: “Due to a legal challenge the planned industrial action which would have affected deliveries in S7 and S8 this Saturday has been called off.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “The CWU has announced that no strike action will be called at Sheffield South Delivery Office on Saturday June 18 and that the ballot has been withdrawn.

“We continue to talk to our trade union and our people about this issue.

“Royal Mail remains committed to providing a high quality of service to our customers in Sheffield.”

Parts of Nether Edge would have been affected, along with Batemoor, Beauchief, Greenhill, Jordanthorpe, Lowedges, Meersbrook, Norton, Norton Lees, Woodseats and Heeley in the city.

The CWU had said the strike had been due to take place ‘in support of a former colleague after a misapplication of the disciplinary code.’

The ballot is back on starting this week. Sheffield South office will have a ballot regarding the same issues as above.
