Decision soon on postal service in Shotton

A DECISION is due soon on the future of a town’s postal service.

Shotton has been without a post office in the town centre since the closure of the business on Chester Road West in October last year.

There have been several failed attempts to rehouse it bu it seems the wait could be over as the Post Office is reviewing responses to a proposed new location at H A Crook Pharmacy on Chester Road East.

A six-week consultation into the new site with customers and interested parties invited to pass on their comments ended on Friday and a spokesman for the Post Office said: “We would like to thank customers for their feedback on the proposed move. We will review all the detail and make a decision in due course.”

Speaking before the launch of the consultation Post Office regional manager Simon Drinkwater said the move would make it easier for customers to get their cash, send and collect their mail and do their banking.

He said: “We are confident this vibrant new-style post office at the heart of the local community will meet customer needs.

“This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office, and will secure services for the future.”

Residents and councillors in Shotton had expressed their concern at losing their post office on Chester Road West.

It was hoped the service would be taken on by the nearby Bargain Booze store but bosses pulled out citing a lack of interest. Shotton Town Council also contacted Iceland, based in Deeside, to take on the provision in the local store.

Long-serving postmistress Margaret Margarson decided it was time to call it a day after 47 years of loyal service on September 29, 2015. Her husband, John, who died in 2014, ran Queensferry post office for more than 60 years, becoming the third generation of his family to run it. His grandfather opened the store in 1906.

Should the move go ahead, the branch would open from 8.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and from 8.30am to 12.30pm on Saturdays.
