The Belgian post office Bpost warns that a strike by the Christian and socialist trades unions will disrupt postal services on Monday and Tuesday. In some parts of the country the effects of the strike could still be felt until next Friday.
Bpost says that it will try and get as many letters and parcels as possible to its postal distribution centres today and during the weekend.

From Sunday evening picket lines will be set up outside sorting offices. This means that deliveries will be severely disrupted on Monday.

Although the sorting offices will re-open on Tuesday morning most parcels and letters won’t reach local post offices in time to go out with the postman/postwoman on his/her round. Bpost says that it will take several days to clear the backlog in some parts of the country.

The Christian and socialist trades unions have called the 24-hour strike to draw attention to a number of unresolved issues. The unions cite staff shortages, increased pressure on productivity, and failure by management to enter into dialogue and the increased use of self-employed staff at B-Post.

The failed deal with the Dutch post office PostNL has also led to disquiet among postal worker.

Despite the strike, the newspapers that in most of the country are delivered by Bpost, will be delivered as normal on Monday and Tuesday.
