Reducing the deficit when you have such ridiculously high public and private debt is like spending £20 less on your shopping bill when you have a £1million overdraft , it's admirable but ultimately just a gesture.

It's a good weapon to keep the mugs from expecting too much bread though. At the present rate bearing in mind we haven't even got close to balancing the books yet we would need several thousand years of much harsher austerity than this to put any meaningful dent in the amount of debt this country is in.

Keep thinking it's just a matter of austerity vs higher taxes though, it gives me a chuckle if nothing else.

Re. private debt. The levels of private debt are as they are because of Govt. monetary policy and fractional reserve banking. Debt has been encouraged. Money has been cheap. Money is debt.
And then when the bubble bursts, the taxpayer picks up the tab and the average jo is 40k in negative equity + £45k household debt. Private debt could be wiped out for the large part and the slate wiped clean. RBS et al would go to the wall, but hey, thats the free market for you.

Public debt is of a different nature (PSBR) - and has has already been stated can be tackled by public investment.

What shouldn't happen is that not only does jo average spend his life with next to nothing - but the lives of his children are also blighted by debt before they've even had a chance to get going.
Debt, money, interest, under the current system are no more than a clever way of those with extracting value from those without.

Im out. One lot of politicians is more than enough to run our country. The EU is a basket case with massive discrepancies in individual countries wealth and salaries. If i was from the balkans id be heading over here as i can earn 9 times what i can get in my own country, live like a peasant, for a few years and go back and build a nice home. There is a massive housing crisis, and another 3 million migrants in the next 15 years makes absolutely no sense. Infrastructure is at breaking point. 3 million migrants bring with it around another million cars, nobody will be moving anywhere on our roads. Im not alone, everybody i know seems to an out voter, but the bookies are never wrong?

Agree with you there. The rich i.e. conservatives, are simply trying to protect their interests by remaining in. They don't want to held fully accountable to the electorate. The EU adds another layer of bureaucracy they can hide behind.

I read an interesting point about how after the financial crash of 2008, Iceland (non EU country) performed significantly better than Ireland (EU), both these countries had similar sized economies/problems, but Iceland had control over their affairs and weren't dependant on legislation from the EU.

Hah. really? Nobody knows what the actual figures of immigration are into this country, not even the Government, all we see is the end effect on our schools, roads, hospitals. Here we have a primary school with all 440 pupils who don't have English as their first language. This was before the doors were opened to Romania as well. If that doesn't ring alarm bells I don't know what would.

The daily mail asked for the number of illegal immigrants from the government under the FOIA in March who are supposed to give the facts within 20 days we are in June and still no figure has been produced - now is that a coincidence with the vote only 2 weeks away?

There's a big difference between being paranoid and having a healthy scepticism and questioning mind.

No your right debt is as old as time, the difference is that 3000 years ago they realized that debts that cant be paid-wont be paid.We are now in an era where an elite insist the debt MUST be paid no matter what the consequences.

The Greeks (almost) rose up against it -but were ultimately sold short by Syriza.

We, in the UK, tend to accept it (willingly). And keep a stiff upper lip. Thats partly why every corrupt billionaire in the world wants to locate themselves in London.

Debt (money) creation is the single most effective means of controlling a population. Way more effective than marshal law.

Seeing as this is a thread about the EU it ought to be mentioned that the ECB is still pumping an extra $63 billion (debt) per month into Europe via quantitative easing (printing money to you and me).

Its in the regulations apparently - it'd be nice if it were otherwise, but when its in the reg.s what can you do ? Thats just the way it is.

I believe it is also a problem in some rural areas where field workers are used such as Norfolk and rural Lancashire with miles of greenhouses. Unless we do gain control of our borders this problem can only get worse. The Bremain cannot/will not give an estimate of how many immigrants we can expect with freedom of movement between now and say 2030 but can confidently predict we will be 4000 worse off financially  No one can predict what remaining in the EU will bring but going on the trend since 1975 things can only get worse and cost us more money. So lets leave and see how things turn out it certainly can't be any worse.

What, are you trying to say you're somewhat sceptical of the much-repeated claim that "immigrants financially benefit the country by paying in more than they take out"?

At current levels of immigration (guesstimated, naturally  ) the UK will be rich beyond our wildest dreams by 2030, if that were true. :hmmmm

What a pity I've already retired. You'll all be able to give up work and have 23 million immigrants finance your retirement. Of course you won't have a house to live, a doctor to see or a hospital able to take care of you in your dotage. I wonder where the figure that they actually contribute more than they take out? I have a relative who has Polish colleagues. 6 of them live in the same house and send home money monthly to Poland so that money is not being spent in this country. We don't just contribute via tax and insurance, the money we earn is also spent in this country to help the economy. The immigration problem won't go away overnight but we will be able to be much more choosy in who we let in and kick out without EU interference.
