Belfast postal operator jailed for stealing from mail over 18 month period

A Belfast postal operator who ran a near two-year-long theft scheme at a Royal Mail sorting office has been jailed for six months.

John William Thompson delayed, opened and stole money from postal packets between November 2013 and May last year.

Thompson, of Larkfield Road, east Belfast, was found guilty following a contest hearing at Belfast Magistrates’ Court in April and was sentenced last week.

The 49-year-old faced eight charges of being a postal operator interfering with mail and one charge of theft.

He intentionally delayed 113 postal packets in the course of their transmission, including packages and letters bound for addresses in west Belfast, Finaghy in the south of the city and Banbridge, Co Down.

On Tuesday, District Judge King sentenced Thompson to six months in prison.

However, he was released on bail pending an appeal of sentence.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty”.
