We have a child benefit system that rather strangely pays child benefit to parents even if the children are not resident in the UK, this applies to UK nationals and the EU states that if it applies to UK nationals then it should apply to economic migrants living and working in the UK too.

How do you stop that?
Stop paying child benefit to parents whose children are not residents in the UK whether they're UK nationals or not.
Nothing the EU could do about it, that's what all but 5 of the EU member states do.

And saying it isn't (an EU thing) doesn't make it not, either.
This article seems pretty unequivocal that it's "an EU thing".

Cameron tried to renegotiate the benefits package paid to migrants earlier in the year (useless tosser that he is) and no-one said then that the Child Allowance didn't come under the auspices of this renegotiation.

See above for details... Just because the telegraph says it's an "EU thing" etc.
What Cameron wanted to do was treat people who lived and worked in the UK differently from people who lived and worked in the UK with a UK passport.

The question is why would you?

Ahh I see....the Telegraph has it wrong. OK.
As to why would you. Simple economics. No politician, business man or economist wants to see money flowing out of the country, and if it's "paid" here, it should be spent here.

Another EU thing if I may add is that if the Bremain camp were to tell us that we will suffer economically if we leave, the pound will drop, export will go down, unemployment will rise, our banking system would be incinerated etc.

So just what is happening in Greece, Cyprus, France, Spain, Portugal and Ireland ? They getting all that and more for staying in the EU.

If we leave we will actually not have any of that happening because we control our own economy and the fact we stayed out of the Euro proves this.

Are you going to tell all those UK pensioners in Spain that?
Simple economics....

I'm not a fan of ridiculous speculation from either side of the debate, the truth is we don't know what will happen but there aren't many reputable economists predicting happy times if we leave.

Old Fishies' ah yebbut...diversionary tactics on show again.
Clearly it would be desirable (from the financial aspect) if those Spanish residents were to spend their money here, but most would see the fundamental difference being that those British OAPs have done their bit, paid their dues, etc etc and can retire to the sun, but my tax going to fund little Piotr Stanislavsky's new bike in some Upper Silesian midden really isn't equitable to that in any shape or form.

Ireland has a broadly similar set up to the UK due to British influence and history, they adopted the Euro and it had suffered a financial crash because of it. This could have happened to us if we had to work under single currency rules.

Sure the will be an upheaval when we leave that's bound to happen, in our favour we have independent currency that has been proven, strong financial regulations and our geographical trading position Europe is not the only place we trade with also trade with the (non EU) world, container shipping is a game changer.

I'm prepared to take a chance after all we managed before 1973 and I'm pretty sure we will be just as ok afterward.

I would imagine it would only be a matter of time before Greece, Spain even Italy may do the same thing.

.
Im considering voting out for various valid democratic reasons amongst others but have no need to start making crackpot statements that Ireland was affected by the financial crash and the UK wasn't.

Bank debt in UK was turned into state debt which has seen a substantial drop in living standards and services and also resulted in further extensions to the pension age.

In or out of the EU the sphere of influence that favours the financial sector over the industrial sector will remain and it is this sphere of influence thats needs to be challenged.Plenty good democratic arguments for leaving the EU but waving a Union Jack in response to one of the EU is no guarantee to make the current global economic crisis disappear especially if that Union Jack is in the hand of Bojo.

It's a good thing we weren't in the Euro when we bailed out Ireland in 2008 wasn't it.

Thats not what you said and the question asked at the time was if our defecit was so bad how was it possible to give out loans to Ireland and the answer has got more do with the corrupt nature of the city of London as a financial center than the prosperity of most citizens in these Islands.

Despite that rather strange allegation, would you rather have seen Ireland collapse into financial chaos (with all that entails) then?

Strange allegation?I presume you mean London. Something like half of Irelands young people had to leave to find work elsewhere and are you not complaining about immigration? Iceland with far worse financial situation knocked back the IMF deal that Ireland took and got a better one and also had the balls to lock up those responsible.

It's not what I said before but I'm saying it now.

Deficit was Labour's legacy and that famous treasury note "There's no money left, good luck"

I don't see what a politically motivated claim about the city and tories has to do with the Euro crisis in Europe.

As to the bailout it was a practical solution as Ireland is one of our biggest trading partner and too big to fail, it's essentially extending a line of credit which will be paid back with interest in order to keep people on this side of the water in work.
