If your weekly pay is £330, then after tax and insurance your net gain is £2.80, more if you're in London of course. The union should be aware of the impact of the increased NI contribution on any pay increase.

Based on a full timer our basic wages, including the delivery supplements, will increase by £6.86 per week gross. Assuming income tax of 20% and NIC’s of 12%, that makes a weekly take home increase of £4.66.

Those of you have mentioned the increase in National Insurance in April: For those extra NIC’s, you’re actually building up more state pension than you were before, so you’re not paying something for nothing.

yes that's right, but as stated, in realterms the actual rise will see us about 2 quid better off by the time the N.I. rise is taken into account. but as you mentioned we are bumping up our state pension which is another way to look at it.

speaking of the state pension, the driver who comes to our office from the mail centre mentioned about us being worse off because we were contracted out for so many years. he said (ballpark figures) people who were always contracted in will receive the new state pension of approx. 160 pounds per week. but we are only going to receive about 130 pounds per week, because of our contracting out for so many years. obviously this will only affect those who are approaching state pension age or thereabouts now. others who are a lot younger have plenty of time to make up the shortfall over the years. not sure if he's accurate on this though?

If that includes 6 hour delivery spans and later start and finish times surely the only way the membership will vote to accept that is if it includes a real incentive, either a further pay increase or substantial lump sum or a reduction in working week,

He’s basically right. The more time you were contracted out of the state second pension, the less you’re likely to get. And the younger you are, the more time you’ve got to make up the difference.
But state pension entitlement is a very individual thing based on your own work/NIC’s history over your working life. You can get a statement of what you might get here: https://www.gov.uk/check-state-pension" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

there are some members who wont vote for those no matter what is offered. I'm one of them.

I'm sorry for me it's all about the money and how much I'm taking home. I'm not interested in doing it for fun or to help with the running of things. If most people were honest they would say exactly the same!

As usual you are being duped, take the 1.6% now, then we will have the talks which no doubt the union will give in to but they will sweeten it with, say another 1% pay rise and tell you what a good deal you are getting.
But what they won't tell you, if the top brass of the union had any balls they would say no and get you the 2.6% now before telling Royal Mail where to stick their talks.

Now you have Dingo coming on with his gloom and doom trying to get you to toe the union line and telling you don't fight now, we will have a big fight later, well I say to him and the rest of the Union if you are not up for it move aside and let other staff take over the reps jobs, people who are prepared to argue and get what the staff deserve.

Delivering post in all weathers is worth a lot more than 1.6% and if you don't tell the union to shove it then you are again giving your job away much too cheaply.

Talk on the internet is so easy. The CWU strategy was always to ensure we get a no strings pay deal with nothing tied to one plan , one wave or later starts.

The next round of talks are all about ensuring we lessen what Royal Mail whilst protecting term and conditions and getting paid for any change including a shorter working week.

We all worth more but so are nurses , police , the tube workers , the teachers etc but none of these have got 1.6%.

If you want more what strings are you prepared to accept up front ! Every 0.1 % is worth around 38 pence.

Sure I will be willing to fight for more and I have over the years but I am a realist as well the members won't fight on a no strings pay deal as soon enough the loss of strike pay outweighs what you are fighting for !

Now you might saying I am trying to scare you but I did not write the report , of com requested it , you really think that Royal Mail are not under pressure from Of Com ?

Look I have said it time and time again the area I come from will be in the front of the fight which is coming as we have always been be that the employee agenda , Dras , single daily delivery , pay and mod or BT 2010 but members will fight for their terms and conditions but wanting an extra 2% which is worth about a fiver I don't think they will without any strings.

TBH as others have said a 1.6% no strings is not brilliant, but better than I expected. If its a true 'no strings' pay deal then I'd vote for it and then get ready for any fight in the future.

I'm going to have a look at the report but at 172 pages its going to take some time :Very Happy Anyone got a list of pages to look at first before trawling through the whole lot?
