Mail mix-up mistakes Newark for New York

A Newark resident has been left scratching his head after a series of letters came through his door addressed to a busy New York neighbourhood.
Mr Bill Baker, 78, lives on Riverside Road but has three times received post for an address on Riverside Boulevard in New York’s Manhattan district.

Mr Baker’s home offers views of the River Devon, a far cry from the intended recipient who lives next to the Hudson.

Mr Baker, who has lived at the address for 50 years, said: “It’s amazing. They must employ idiots at the sorting office.

“There is no postcode that suggests it is for Newark. It even has an air mail stamp so to get it confused with New York is incredible.

“I wonder what the postman is thinking when he puts it through my letterbox because he must know it’s not the right address.”

The first time he received a New York letter was in December.

“I just shoved it back in the post box and it wasn’t long before it came back again,” Mr Baker said.

“It seems like a joke but it could be serious because for all I know that letter could be important.”

He said he put the letter back into the postbox again, and hoped it wouldn’t return a second time.

He did the same with the two other letters.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “It is likely that this item’s address was misread by our electronic sorting machines when it became mixed with domestic mail as the letter’s addressing is very similar to an address in Newark.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and all staff are being reminded to check mail thoroughly before delivery.

“We will be making arrangements to collect the item from the customer and ensure that it is processed with our international mail for delivery to the USA.

“Customers who receive an international item in error should hand it into a Royal Mail delivery office or a Post Office so that it can be processed correctly.”
