Royal Mail refusing to release Basel match ticket after Jon Tugiono had to fly home for family funeral

London-based Jon Tugiono was all set to join the legions of Liverpudlians descending on the Swiss city of Basel to watch Jurgen Klopp's men take on Sevilla on Wednesday but had to fly home to Indonesia for due to a family bereavement before his ticket had arrived through the post.

The 25-year-old will return from Asia to Basel for the match but, with there not being enough time to return to London to pick up his ticket, was hoping a friend travelling from the capital on the morning of the game could pick it up for him.

Royal Mail however are refusing to release the letter containing Jon's match ticket to anyone except those living at the same address, raising the prospect of Jon being stuck outside the stadium before the match with his ticket still sitting in a postal depot back in England.

Jon told the ECHO: "I had to go back to Indonesia because my grandpa passed away and when the ticket got delivered, there was no one in my flat to sign for it so obviously it went to the post office.

"I sent a copy of my passport, proof of address, proof of purchase even, and a letter of authorisation, but they insist on original ID.

"I'm in Indonesia, so obviously I wouldn't leave my ID lying about. My mate did try going to them, twice, and even asked if I could speak to them through FaceTime or Skype, but they weren't having it.

"So I rang Royal Mail from Indonesia to try and reason with them, and they basically said there's nothing they could do unless someone who lived in the flat with me could pick it up, but I live with my brother who went home with me, so at the moment the ticket is there, but Royal Mail say there is no way of retrieving it.

"I'd be devastated to miss the match, especially after such a difficult time at home, and I really hope Royal Mail can see sense and find a way of helping me out."

Royal Mail have been approached for a comment.

If that had been the case I wouldn't have given his appeal much chance of success.

Jon Tugiono might do well to realise that some of us live quite happy lives not taking the slightest interest in football or any other sport.

Maybe he should realise that there's much more to life than grown men being paid a stupid amount of money for kicking a ball around for 1½ hours.

Ssssh LZ. Don't you realise it's our National Sport (despite the fact we're crap at it). To para phrase Karl Marx, "It's the Opium of the masses" And it certainly does manage to separate thousands of innocents from their hard earned cash every weekend, for just a couple of hours of entertainment and a sense of either contentment or damnation! .....Although if you've got Sky Sports you can watch it on catch up!

National Sport, yes, but but there's more than one team whose fans have a tradition of violence and hooliganism. One with a ground at Upton Park has witnessed racism amongst fans and here football hooliganism originated amongst bovver boys in the 1960s. Sympathisers of the National Front have handed out National Front leaflets outside Upton Park particularly following the launch of the National Front youth newspaper 'Bulldog' in 1977, and have successfully sold club memorabilia carrying 'NF' slogans and motifs. The origins of West Ham's links with organised football-related violence started in the 1960s with the establishment of The Mile End Mob ( named after a particularly tough area of the East End of London ). During the 1970s and 1980s ( the main era for organised football-related violence ) West Ham gained further notoriety for the levels of hooliganism in their fan base and antagonistic behaviour towards both their own and rival fans, and the police. During the 1970s in particular, rival groups of West Ham fans from neighbouring areas ( most often groups from the districts of Barking & Dagenham) often fought each other at games. In 1980 the club were forced to play their Cup Winners Cup game against Castilla behind closed doors to an empty ground after fans rioted at the away leg of the tie in the Bernabeu. In 1985 five fans were stabbed on a cross-channel ferry to France after fighting involving fans of West Ham, Manchester United and Everton. In 2006, twenty West Ham fans appeared in an Italian court following their arrest after fights with rival supporters in Sicily before and after West Ham's game against Palermo in the away leg of their 2006–07 UEFA Cup game. At the home leg fans had bought T-shirts bearing the slogan "The Mafia" – a reference to Sicily being the home of the Cosa Nostra. This was seen as antagonistic by Palermo fans. Six West Ham fans, six police officers and five locals suffered minor injuries in fighting in Sicily. Rival fans threw bottles and chairs in the city's Teatro Massimo district. 500 people were involved in the brawl and police officers were attacked. It took police in riot gear more than an hour to bring the violence under control. An eyewitness said, "West Ham fans behaved like animals, roaming the streets, bottles in hand searching for anyone to fight". More than 2,500 West Ham fans travelled to Palermo for the game.

It was an Ironic Sssssh LZ, not an indication to Shut Up mate.

I can't stand Football either but as a Father of Football Mad son's I've had to listen to my fair share of drunkards talking total bollocks about a game they only watch, and can't be arsed to play! I gave up trying to explain to them that Football is a Business that just happens to play a sport. You've got to admire the way that Clubs are able to milk millions from Fans who are desperate to buy their latest overpriced shirt (which of course is slightly different from last seasons) and they've got to get the away shirt as well!

At least my current Delivery Office is Free of the Gobby Football Fanatics that love to come in on a Monday and slag down everyone elses Team that may have lost that weekend (normally very quiet when theirs loses). Football is the lowest common denomination, I find it amusing that when two people meet the first "Ice Breaker" question is often, "What team do you support mate"? Two strangers could end up as instant adversarys because they support opposing Teams.

You're right of course that Football does have an Anti-Social element that are more interested in Fighting. These type of people exist in every society and I'm sure if you banned Football tomorrow they'd find another outlet for their aggression.

Always strange how some are so quick to tell everyone else that football is really a load of old wossname, but funnily enough no-one ever seems to feel obliged to tell the Rugby fans, golfers, anglers etc that what they like is really a load of cack too.

Do you think Jon Tugiono's likely to get any joy from having his plea highlighted on RMC Tman? I'm surprised no ones laid out Royal Mail's procedures for collecting 739 items, and pointed out he hasn't complied with them.

I'll admit to having a cynical view of Football as a Business, but are you telling me I'm wrong? These Foreign Billionaires certainly don't invest in these Clubs for the love of the sport.

No idea why more people don't have a pop at the sports/pastimes that you mention. I think that perhaps if you gain pleasure from actually participating in any sport/pastime, instead of just watching it on TV, you're probably not as sensitive about any criticism? After all you've had your pleasure and opinions are like assholes ...Everyone's got one!
