Amlwch couple's 'lives saved' from gas leak by their postwoman

AN AMLWCH couple were lucky to escape with their lives after a gas leak at their house.

Gail Woods, aged 72, and her husband William, aged 75, of Lon Goch, were alerted by their quick-thinking postwoman Julie Hughes, aged 36, while she was on her rounds.

Mrs Woods said: “I was just getting the hoover out and there was a very loud banging at the door and the bell was ringing.

“Sandra told us there was a strong smell of gas so we left and got straight onto British Gas emergency who came and patched up the pipe within an hour.

“They said we were very lucky.

“She saved our lives.

“One of the pipes had split with rust - they did a full service and check over so we’re ok now.”

The retired couple, who moved to the area from Hale, Liverpool about 26 years ago, said they owe their lives to the quick-thinking postwoman, whom they thanked with a card and box of chocolates.

Mrs Hughes, who has been delivering mail in Amlwch for 7 years, said: “I felt it was the right thing to do.

“While I was delivering in the Lon Goch area, I noticed a smell and I carried on delivering letters but as I got closer to Mr and Ms Woods front door, I realised what was going on.

“I made sure Mr and Ms Woods were aware about the gas leak and continued my round.”

Royal Mail’s Amlwch Delivery Office Manager, Barbara Jones, said: “Her actions demonstrate exactly why our postmen and women are such highly valued members of their local communities.

“Royal Mail’s postmen and women are out in the community six days a week, across the country.

“Our people make daily deliveries to almost 29 million addresses in the UK, and this makes them more visible on the streets than policemen, and they are often first at the scene in cases of emergency, and instinctively get involved."
