Royal Mail to move Dumbarton services to Alexandria in July

The Royal Mail has confirmed plans to relocate Dumbarton delivery office operations into Alexandria from July.

The move will happen on July 11, and Royal Mail say there will be no impact on deliveries and no job losses as a result of the move.

However, the local Post Office branch in Dumbarton could not provide a collection facility for customers, due to "lack of space" and volumes of parcels, meaning people in Dumbarton will have to travel to Alexandria to pick up parcels.

The firm say it is responding to the huge growth in electronic communications, and decline in letter volumes while seeing an increasing number of parcels and online shopping being delivered.


A statement from Royal Mail said when the move goes ahead, they expect there to be "no impact on deliveries to our customers".

The statement also said: "The postmen and women who work in Dumbarton delivery office will continue to serve the local community, delivering a high quality service to our customers.

"Royal Mail aims to continue to provide a consistent and high quality service to our customers in Dumbarton."

With no collection point in place, Dumbarton residents will have to make their way to Lomond Industrial Estate to collect their parcels if they are not in when the posties attempt to deliver them the first time.

Now Jackie Baillie MSP has said she will call on the Royal Mail to stop the move until a "compromise that is more convenient" is put in place.

She told the Reporter: "I previously met with Royal Mail bosses to demand an alternative arrangement for their customers in Dumbarton.

"There will always be a need for a local collection point as the Lomond Industrial Estate is difficult to reach for many staff and customers in Dumbarton who rely on public transport.

"I simply do not buy the argument that there is not enough space in the post office on the High Street, or anywhere else for that matter, to create a collection point for undelivered parcels. It strikes me that this is yet another money-saving exercise from Royal Mail designed to suit their shareholders rather than their staff and customers."


If a parcel can not be delivered on the first attempt, there are a few options.

Parcels can be redelivered free of charge, or to a different address within the same postcode area. Items can also be left with a neighbour.

Alternately, customers can collect any parcels from Alexandria Delivery Office which is open from 7am-6.30pm Monday to Friday, with extended opening hours to 8pm on Wednesday.

It is also open from 7am-2pm on Saturday.
