I wonder if anybody can help me ,I work in a Mail Centre, i have doing a lot of driving duties as my overtime, this is always 7.5 tonne vechile,once i have 15 drives in a 6 month period, i am classed as a professional driver and i become INSCOPE. Am i due a driving allowance, how much should it be and can i get it backdated, should it be included in my holiday pay,the last time i asked, i was told i was not due it as i was not attached to the unit.Thanks. .

My understanding is that you only get MGV money if and when you perform it as duty and not overtime so you may not even be entitled if you do it on SA. Speak to the Rep to clarify

The fact that you have been driving 7.5 tonne vehicles on a regular basis means you are limited as to the amount of hours you can work, and you have to have a 45 hour break every 14 days ( as I remember ). These are just a couple of reasons 7.5 tonne Professional Drivers are on a higher pay scale ( it's not a driving allowance ). You are classed as a professional driver, and your rep should get onto this, and yes, it should be backdated. This will obviously have a knock-on effect on your pension.

From what I gather you should be entitled to a 'substitution' payment. For the days you perform MGV work.

As already mentioned, this will impact on the hours that you can work in another function. You then should manually input your card every day too.

On the information you have given you are only performing 7.5 tonne driving duties on an ad-hoc basis in addition to your signed duty and not on a full time basis. It is more than likely that you will appear on the seniority list for a different function than what a full time professional driver who would be on the seniority list for the distribution function. You may have completed the various modules to be given your cpc authentication card but this does not necessarily mean you are classed as a bona fide professional driver and are only being used to cover certain operational requirements. As has been previously mentioned by driving this type of vehicle your working hours and breaks are scrutinized by the European driving regulations. You should have been downloading your tachograph digital card after each time operating a 7.5 tonne vehicle and completing a variance form for the change from your signed duty. There is no actual driving allowance for driving as a professional driver other than a higher basic wage which has also been mentioned. On the day that you drove 7.7 tonne vehicles and the time involved this may entitle you to the hourly payment for a professional driver to be offset against the overtime rate and this matter you will have to take up with your union rep.

Well done, that is exactly what happened to me. Mine only had to go back 18 months, hopefully you can get the proof you need. You'll find you have a nice pay slip soon.

It took 6 months all told. I had a lot of help from my union rep. He had heard of a similar case at Swindon, and contacted the rep there, he gave him all the relevant details. I didn't have to prove, it was all on record, thankfully.
