A Royal Mail worker stole packages from a depot - including a computer tablet and car seat covers - and sent them to herself.

Natalie Wallwork, 32, of Manor Drive, Denton , worked at the mail centre on Oldham Road, Ancoats , but was caught re-labelling and sending parcels to her own address, as well as her parents’ and her partner’s work.

She pleaded guilty to six counts of theft at Manchester Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Prosecuting, David Morton said Wallwork worked in the depot repairing damaged parcels when she starting stealing parcels.

He said: “She had been placing false labels on items and sending them to herself, to her parents’ address and to her partner’s work address.”

The value of the items was estimated to be around £500 - although it was not stated how many individual parcels were stolen.

The thefts took place in November 2015.

Bosses at Royal Mail noticed this was going on so set up CCTV to watch Wallwork and also sent her ‘test’ parcels to try and catch her in the act.

She was found to have re-addressed one of the test parcels to herself.

Mr Morton added: “She was interviewed and made full admissions to what she had been doing. She said it was because she was short of money and they were gifts.”

It was also revealed she had stolen stamps.


Wallwork had worked for the company for 13 years - but had resigned shortly after the thefts.

Karl Benson, mitigating, said she started working for Royal Mail in 2002 and had an ‘unblemished’ record.

He went on to detail Wallwork had kidney stones in 2014 and after treatment was left unable to walk and was in a significant amount of pain and on a lot of medication.

He said: “She acted out of character.”

It was also stated she suffered with depression and anxiety.

The case was adjourned until April 13 while pre-sentence reports are made.

A Royal Mail worker was blasted by a judge but spared jail after she stole packages and re-posted them to her own home.

During the short lived scam last November, Natalie Wallwork even used her employer’s stamps rather than paying for them herself, Manchester magistrates’ court heard.

District Judge John Temperley avoided sending Wallwork straight to jail, but told her: “What you did seriously damages the reputation of the Royal Mail.

“These offences cross the custody threshold and there was a high level of a breach of trust.”

Wallwork, 32, of Manor Road, Denton, earlier pleaded guilty to six counts of theft and was sentenced to 16 weeks imprisonment, suspended for a year.

The judge ordered her to pay £500 prosecution costs along with an £80 victim surcharge.

Prosecutor Roger Brown said Wallwork had worked for Royal Mail since 2002 and had a previously unblemished character. At the time of her thieving, she was in the Mail Centre on Oldham Road, Ancoats.


It had been her job to repair damaged parcels but last year she began stealing them.

Mr Brown said she had re-labelled packages sending them to herself, her parents’ home and to her partner’s workplace. But bosses quickly became suspicious. She was trapped after being sent ‘test’ parcels and one of them was found to have been sent to her home.

She made a full confession to investigators and resigned shortly after.

The value of the items – including a computer tablet and car seat covers – was estimated at £500.

Karl Benson, defending, said in 2014 Wallwork had undergone an unsuccessful operation for kidney stones. It left her unable to walk without crutches.

“She also suffers from depression and anxiety and behaved out of character”, added Mr Benson.
