Was told by DOM that if anyone on my round have opted out of D2D's we don't deliver the Referendum leaflet to them

I asked my DOM on Monday morning what the deal with those with an opt out was (as it is technically a D2D). I was told to do the opposite, Deliver them to everyone.

You'd have thought the union and senior RM bods would have had that little scenario would have been settled before D-Day!

It is not possible for Royal Mail to separate material you don’t want from those you do want
For example: advertising offers or leaflets from material from Central and Local Government and other public bodies.

Just a few lines down it says:

Election material is not delivered by the Door to Door service and is therefore not affected by this opt out.

It's been classed as election material otherwise the rules about election stuff not being allowed within a certain number of days of an election wouldn't apply to it

it is election material......it isn't election material.... wtf......is it or isn't it.

just got tomorrow left to finish them off. we've all been doing extra D2Ds with them as well because most of the office has only 1 or 2 sets this week, so we all thought, we are going to those doors anyway so we may as well. so, because we will be finished our D2Ds 3 days early this week it was announce today........lapsing for the rest of the week. nice big thank you for your efforts lads and lasses. pack of b******s.

This can be confusing - its not election material for us - its D2D so the D2D rules apply.

However, it is political so it shouldn't be delivered during the Election Embargo period. Because of that the Government decided to make it a 3 day D2D contract. Because its a 3 day contract we can't deliver it during the rest of the week, the fact that there is an embargo doesn't affect when we deliver it, the contract does.

Seems like managers havent informed everyone at our office it all had to be delivered by today. I noticed after I had bagged up my walk and after that most people just took where they were going.

Done all mine in three days like a good boy, with the other D2D's as im going there anyway, with the exception of Saturdays D2D's as its my day off.

dom will love you, doing that all your normal d2d in three days, means you have extra time for lapsing now on Thursday and Friday!

An update from a member who emailed "just say it" - this is their response:

Thank you for writing to Just Say It for clarification on the recent Door to Door drop.
I am told that there is no ‘conscience clause’ under which Royal Mail could decide not to deliver mail which supports views individual colleagues might not share. We are proud to give the best possible service to customers and will do all we can to deliver all mail on time. Provided the mail meets required standards we will handle it safely and securely and will not turn away customers because of political views.

The agreement on election material includes provision for dealing with special circumstances where an individual has genuine problems in delivering candidate leaflets. The postman or woman would need to explain the personal circumstances which made it difficult for them to complete the delivery and the line manager would work with the CWU to make alternative arrangements to ensure we met our responsibilities under the Representation Of The People Act.
