THE CHAIR of a community action group has lamented the loss of Tywyn Sorting Office to another county and has described it as “yet another blow for the town”.
The service has moved from Tywyn to Machynlleth, and there are strong concerns that the move will eventually lead to further job losses for the town.
Within the last year, Tywyn has lost its HSBC bank, its register office and several local businesses and the loss of the sorting office is the latest in a series of departures which have devastated the town.
Quentin Deakin, chair of SOS Gwynedd, a group established to protect front-line services in the county, said: “Services in this area are once again being threatened by a policy of centralisation."
Mr Deakin was also concerned about the lack of meaningful consultation with residents and staff when the Royal Mail’s initial proposal for the move took place.
“The manner in which this change was notified also gives grave cause for concern,” he added.
A spokesman for Royal Mail said: “Royal Mail is committed to maintaining the service it provides in Tywyn."
