one wave ?

Post by Chewster »

Our manager did say something about pushing for one wave. It's gonna be a big change for those of us in the far reaches, we get less than 10% of our mail sequenced right now, it's gonna be a hell of a change to make that up to 100%. Also, that's gonna go totally out of the window at Christmas when you get loads of cards with totally wrong addresses etc...

so most OT will be in darkness soon? wont that be a health and safety issue? I would be very angry to get a knock at my door at 9 or 10pm at night from a postie asking me to take in a parcel for a neighbour. and then at Christmas it will all go to sh**t.

This is what we have been "told". You will not need a frame to throw mail off into, you will have a York waiting for you with boxes in. It will all be sequenced, letters, flats, packets and D2D. It will be 99% accurate. Our office will be shared, we will come in at one time, load our vans (remember no sorting or throwing off) and depart. Another lorry turns up with the Yorks for another office and leaves them at our office, they turn up, load their vans and depart. You could be, in theory, working 9am to 5pm. Working like this you will have a longer delivery span meaning less walks, less staff, less vans, etc. saving money. All this will be in within two years.
Remember, this is what we have been "told". Some of it could be true for the future, some may not. To me it sounds like a LoS.

So how do you sort through the flats / sequenced / turn letters for parcels / check keep safes & redirections? You'd need to do that in the street from the back of the can

Sequencing flats, letters and maybe d2d is doable if RM buy them XMS machines. As for packets it would mean every MC would need at least one packet sorting machine which would mean probably at least 1/2 of existing MCs closing and either merging with other ones or moving to bigger sites

I think you could be onto something there. Our local mail centre seems to have a freeze on maintenance spending on the building for anything more expensive than a light bulb.

I don't think RM would close them all down as RM sites, some of them might be suitable for conversion into "Super DOs", merging a number of existing ones into old MC buildings

I don't know the specifics but is it feasible that you could have a fully sequenced tray containing flats, letters and D2D with each tray also containing a little printout of any outsize items (parcels, etc) or redirections for addresses in there?

We already do a little sorting in the back of the van moving parcels around and bagging up our next loop so it's possible to do the redirections. Not as easy as it is to do it at a frame but more than possible. If a BT or Virgin engineer can faff about with a junction box at the side of the road then is it so hard for us to put a sticker on an item in the back of a van? Don't the USPS vans on rural duties basically run a small PO from the back of their vans as well as delivering?

Why wouldn't you just do it before you left the office?
With all the new technology in the world there will still be some indoor work. Nothing is 100% accurate.
So you would just look through the trays to find your keepsafes/redirections etc etc.

Unless they would expect you to deliver from several bundles in one go?
