The future of the postman job
I use to think that working for the Royal Mail as a postman would be a good job because the job kept you fit you worked out doors no matter what the weather you didn't need a driving licence now a days you do have to have a driving licence or you won't get a job as a postman because it's all driving now or it will be in the future witch also means driving around in a van doing your rounds no more walking so many miles with a bit of weight on your back witch will make you less fit and the job keeping you fit was one of the reasons I wanted tobe a postman and I can't see that Happing driving about in a van all day, so am I right In what I am saying about the postman of today or have I got it completely wrong if so please do put me right!

Re: The future of the postman job
Yes, you are right you do need to have a full driving licence now. There are still a lot of walking rounds these days and I very much doubt they will make it all driving rounds, mainly because of the costs. The reason you need a driving licence these days is so that they have got more flexibility when it comes to holidays and sickness.

although there might also be some in Mail Centres without driving, no matter the weather and more

Re: The future of the postman job
If there are any Mail Centre jobs advertised they are likely to be Part Time late shift jobs, which will probably be standing in one place facing or sorting packets for 4 hours with one 20 minute break.Lounge Lizard wrote:although there might also be some in Mail Centres without driving, no matter the weather and more.
They aren't going to make you fit, just bored and suicidal.

Or learn to ride a bike and get a job with TNT., if they are in your area. If you want to work for Royal Mail and be a delivery postie, you must be able to drive, read and write. These are the skill sets that they require.

The future of the postman job
Postman Pat delivered in a van way back in 1981. Granted, he had a cat for company, not sure you'd be allowed that now, haha!
One of the reasons I'm hoping to become a full time Postie is for the fitness aspect. I'm pretty lazy when it comes to exercise and the like, and I'm carry a fair bit more weight than I'd like. I lost a lot of it once after some intense dieting, but that is not particularly fun - so why not get fit while you work and get paid for it?
I can tell you, you're right about not getting fit driving a van all day! I've been doing that for the past 13 years, as a windscreen repair/replacement tech, and in the earlier years (2003 to 2009) it was a lot less driving and a lot more fitting, and my weight kept pretty stable. Then in 2010 I went to work for a different company, with a much larger area to cover, so I did half as much fitting and twice as much driving - and thats when I gained weight.
So I'm hoping the shock to the system of walking roughly 8 miles a day will shed the fat and tone me up - and to be honest, you rarely see a fat Postie! (although I did see one today, big guy too)

Sorry, hope you don't mind me chopping up your post. These are the exact reasons why most people outside of RM think that our job is an overpaid piece of cake and also the reason why so many new starters quit within a very short time of starting. The job is physically harsh. Seriously. I was proper fit before this job - or so I thought!!Postman Matt wrote:One of the reasons I'm hoping to become a full time Postie is for the fitness aspect...... so why not get fit while you work and get paid for it?.... Cant all be driving. A van is no use in a built up area, other than to get you there. Most duties in my area use vans but still walk 5-7 miles a day. Physically very demanding but does keep you trim. And tired !
