All those ridiculous modern day letterbox designs with silly strong spring returns and inches of draught excluder don't help.

I used to Vaseline them and cover with plasters but it became a bit awkward when all fingers are covered up to flick through the mail plus the plasters used to come off. However I've found a saviour and I urge anyone who suffers from this to buy O'Keefe's Working Hands hand cream. You can get it in Boots at about £7.99 and I've also found it in Screwfix and Toolstation for about £5.99. It is absolutely brilliant and my hands healed up within two days and have never split again. It is the best stuff to use and although it sounds a bit pricey it is quite a large tub and you only use a smear at a time so lasts ages.
Just ordered some on Amazon £5.49 and free delivery :thumbup

This thread is brought to you by O'Keefes - the makers of legendary O'Keefes Working Hands Cream. Available now from the foyer.

These cracks are murder and I reckon they are caused by TWO things, first the paper drying your hands out when prepping your mail then a cold wind cracking open your dry skin when outside.

The solution I use is easy - apply a barrier cream just after you get in to the office in the morning (before you start prepping) then again just before you step out of the van to so your first loop. That will stop cracks occurring 100% guaranteed. Apply a bit in the evening and it become 110% guaranteed. By barrier creme we are basically talking 100% PETROLEUM JELLY, not a hand cream or moisturizing cream which is way too lightweight and is quickly absorbed/wipes off.

You can get Petroleum Jelly (also sold as Vaseline) in poundshops or Superdrug do a good one for a quid in a handy small tub. Keep one on your frame and one in the Van for convenience?

To quickly cure the cracks put a small dab of this cream on then a tight plaster across the crack to pull it shut and another plaster 90degrees to that to hold it in place, keep plastered up all day and night. :wave

It only happens in the winter, and when i catch them sometimes on letterboxes or gates it feels like an electric shock.

I have to tape them up each day, has anyone who also suffers from this any suggestions on what else i could try, is there a product i could buy ?

Since I've retired I don't get cracked fingertips anymore,,no amount of cream helps,,just be sure to keep them clean,,wear gloves and prevent infection,,unfortunately its an occupational hazard which is related to the weather,,when it gets cold,,your skin contracts to retain heat, then the cracks start to appear.,take care out there,,and beware of the snakes that say they're your mates, that slither and slide amongst you,

I wear the full finger gloves they gave me when I was a Christmas Casual at the parcel centre. The gloves are polyester, and have rubberised nubs on the finger tips and palms. They work really well. Never had problems with split skin since.

Many letterboxes seem to have both bristles and a well-sprung internal letterplate. These seem to give way suddenly and I often end up ramming the cuticle on the top of my thumb into the box. Any tips to avoid this?

Throw the mail on the floor in front of the door, ignore letterbox.

Doing the former will certainly expedite the latter.

Another one here who also uses O'keeffe's hand cream. Not had any cracked finger tips for the last 18 months of use.
