Posties continue to be banned from delivering in a number of streets after dog attacks

BUNGLING Royal Mail printed the wrong telephone number for enquiries in a letter to residents about postal deliveries being suspended.

No deliveries have been made in half a dozen Weoley Castle streets for the past week after terrified postmen were confronted by out of control dogs.

Royal Mail implemented the ban after a postman was forced to use his delivery pouch to fend off two “aggressive” animals in Dormston Drive on February 18.

Royal Mail said two postmen were also targeted by the same dogs, which were again “untethered and roaming the streets” the following day.

The dog’s owner was also said to have acted in an “aggressive and threatening manner”.

A Royal Mail letter to residents said they could collect post from Selly Oak Delivery Office in Elliott Road and contained a supposed number for the depot. But it has since emerged that the number was for the Quinton Office.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We apologise to customers in the Selly Oak area whose mail has been suspended following a recent incident.

“Due to an administrative error, an incorrect phone number for customers to contact our Selly Oak delivery office inquiry office, was given in the notice of suspension letter to customers. The correct phone number is 0121 254 3402.”

The spokeswoman confirmed the suspension is still “in place until we have assurances that the dogs will be kept under control when our postmen are in the area delivering mail.”

She added: “Suspension of delivery is always a last resort and we sincerely apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused by this temporary suspension. We hope that the dogs’ owner will take action swiftly to ensure that we can reinstate deliveries.”

The decision also affects homes in Kinnerton Crescent, Stonebrook Way, Flyford Croft, Salwarpe Grove and Barnes Hill.

In Birmingham, 39 postal delivery workers were bitten by dogs last year – a 15 per cent rise.
