Royal mail clears up confusion over 2 'missing' Bolton post boxes

ROYAL Mail bosses have explained why one post box was moved and how another will be replaced.

Sharples residents were shocked when they went to post their mail at the corner of Kellett Street and Park Row in Eagley — where it is believed a pillar box has stood for 170 years — to find it had disappeared.

After investigating, the confused residents found that the box had been relocated 200 metres along the road to the corner of Andrew Lane Park.

Royal Mail said the reason for the move was because the owner of the former Post Office property, Jo Davis, had asked for it to be moved from outside her renovated home.

But this was something Ms Davis refuted.

Royal Mail has now apologised for the mix-up.

A spokesman said: “In our original statement about the change of location of the post box to a new location some 200 metres away in Northland Drive, we stated that the owner of the private land, where the postbox was located, had asked for its removal.

"This was not the case and we apologise to the resident. The owner had asked us to turn the box around, with the posting aperture accessible from the public pavement. When we investigated further, we decided that as the box was on private land, that we would move it to a public site.

"The box has now been reinstated at Northland Drive.”


There is better news however for residents in Bromley Cross after a post box in Darwen Road was knocked down in a road accident in December 2015 and damaged beyond repair.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: "We ordered a replacement which has now arrived and is due to be installed this week — it and will be back in service from Monday. We apologise to customers for the inconvenience."
