HI all, my name is Matt, and I hope my forum name isn't too presumptuous, but I've just come back from meeting with someone at Manpower about starting the 12week initial contract as a driver/walker.
Postie is something I've though about doing for ages, as all the ones I've met seem quite happy with life and cheerful, and most of them have been doing it for years, so there must be something good about it to stay!
I must admit, the thought of working for a smudge over minimum wage for the next 12 weeks is daunting and scary - I'm used to a chunk more than that. I've come from a background of being a mobile windscreen fitter, so hard work and outdoors working are not new to me (although I fully realise I didn't spend as much time outside as you guys do), and I'm hoping the role with do wonders for my fitness levels (and glad I gave up smoking 6 months ago if I'm going to be doing a lot of walking)
So I've just gotta wait for the pre-checks to come back all clear then I'm told I should get my start date, location and time.
Any hints/tips of what to expect, and how to conduct myself? I know there's absolutely no guarantee I'll be kept on past the 12 week initial period, let alone an offer of full time employment offered, but I'm eager to create a good impression and show willing, as well as learn the job as quick as poss to be productive, so as to create the best possible chance of being "chosen" to stay on.
Thanks!

Welcome, moved you to the new starters forum, plenty of threads in here with hints and tips.
I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Hello, my name is Matt
Well, completed my first day. And it wasn't too bad! Obviously I had no clue what I'm doing, but at least some of the words I'd read here (like "frame") began to make sense.
Started at 6:30, mooched about a bit watching others and trying not to get in the way. Then was given a mech box and told to fill a frame. Did that for a bit then the guy who's walk it was came over and took over, and put me on collating door-to-door duty. That was fun (not). Did 4 boxes for him, then 6 for someone else, then a blonde girl smiled sweetly at me so I done a few for her too. Then some more for one of the managers who was filling a frame.
Then I got out on a walk with another manager. Only really half a walk because we split up and shared it. Three bags total, but got it all done and manager said he was quite impressed I had kept up with him, as he was expecting to get back to the van and have to wait for me. To be fair, I was impressed I didn't collapse - looks like quitting smoking was a good idea!
Long day though, 6:30 till 3pm, with travelling thats 6am to 3:30pm
