Mail ban at flats after postman slips on urine

Royal Mail has suspended deliveries to a Dundee block of flats after a postman slipped on urine within the close.

Aftab Alam Quereshi, who has lived in Albert Street for 18 years, said he hasn’t received post for two months and Royal Mail confirmed his block was too dangerous for post to be delivered.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “Royal Mail can confirm it has temporarily suspended deliveries to 221 Albert Street, Dundee, until the tenement building is made safe for our staff to undertake deliveries.



“We wrote to the customers affected in late December when the suspension was put in place, following an injury sustained by one of our postmen who slipped on urine in the stairwell, which does not have a handrail.

“Royal Mail has carried out several risk assessments in recent months and, unfortunately, the building is still not safe.

“The safety and welfare of our staff is paramount and the suspension of delivery is always a last resort. We sincerely apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused.”

Aftab spoke of the anti-social problems he has experienced at his home, including syringes being dumped and yobs throwing beer cans at his door.

The father-to-be said he has had people at the front door asking for “foil papers” and fears for the safety of his 29-year-old pregnant wife, Kauser.

He said he was at loggerheads with the city council, police and also Royal Mail, with the 39-year-old saying his home has not received mail since the end of December.

Aftab said: “We’ve just missed a midwife appointment because we didn’t receive the confirmation in the mail.

“Sometimes when my wife and I are walking in the close we actually see kids urinating, but because they are underage I can’t do anything. The situation is getting worse with kids drinking in the close and we have seen excrement as well.

“We threaten to call the police but the kids have thrown cans at our door and the situation with people coming to the door is becoming more frequent. I fear something worse will happen.”

A spokeswoman for Dundee City Council said: “The council and a number of other agencies have been providing support to owners and tenants at this property.

“We can provide financial assistance towards the installation of a secure door entry. However, we require further information from the owners to begin this process.”
