There will be DO mergers the cost of a unit on an industrial estate is nothing and selling town and city centre sites for development will raise far more than it will cost to relocate.
The only issue likely to halt a DO closure/ merger is the extra travelling time that might need to be planned into deliveries, this is actually one of the few rumours that's nailed on to happen in some shape or form.

not only will the union agree to it but if you read your last issue of the voice, in the big meeting about how the union can combat the royal mails vision for us, our very busy area reps ideas were along the lines of longer deliveries, 2x3.5 hour deliveries with break in the middle, MORE bespoke(oneday) d2dr contracts etcDirtyHarry wrote:Surely to God the union won't allow these psychopaths to enforce 6 hour deliveries? How in God's name can 6 hours out in all weathers come anywhere near being compatible with health & safety requirements????
So you can already see how our union are looking at ways to help alleviate our already bone crunching joint wrecking workload!

Oh you are so right, why aren't the union putting something out from hq to allay our fears?pinstripe wrote:Can you imagine the cost of merging three delivery offices into one, on a nationwide scale. The cost would be far to high.
They would have to buy the land and then build the offices. If I recall correctly, we have well over a thousand delivery offices. The cost in a city centre could never justify it.
One man, one van? Never work, RM would either have to pay for non-drivers to sit their driving test, or pay off non-drivers.
Honestly, these are the type of rumours that the CWU should be addressing publicly to their members.
The rumours are out, and people are worrying, but the silence is deafening.

aye fair enough on that....(no later than 0700)... but we are talking possible 10-6 with this new strategy. these times are not agreed.zx135 wrote:we agreed to varying start times as part of the BT2010 agreement, and that agreement was voted in by the membership, we did get a vote on it.daveyeff wrote:zx135, when were later start times agreed?... why did we not get a vote. it will drastically affect a lot of people with kids and other afternoon commitments.
it was all to do with the mail arrival times depending on when your office mail was put through the sequencing machines which would affect mail arrival times and thus start times, now the agreement did state the "Vast Majority" but just as the FT to PT ratio it was not all duties/offices will have this just the vast majority over the entire country, so a local office can try and change the start times to later than 0700, but it can be fought through the IR processBT2010 Agreement wrote: As part of the operational transformation the vast majority of full time delivery duties will start no later than 0700. The majority of delivery routes will be designed to start and finish at the workplace; however there will be some duties where it is more beneficial for both parties to agree alternative arrangements.

Hit the nail on the head as usual FT. A nearby office is moving.......the planner has to put in a Duty and a Half Duty just to cover all the extra traveling time. Personally if I was one of those guys it wouldn't worry me too much. They've now got an extra 40 mins driving instead of walking about delivering in the wind & rain.fishtank wrote:There will be DO mergers the cost of a unit on an industrial estate is nothing and selling town and city centre sites for development will raise far more than it will cost to relocate.

They are not worried about instant savings with mergers .In our area they are merging two offices and the savings wont really start for another 9 years with saving being fully achieved a whole 16 years after the merger.

If that was the exception, it would be possible. I feel it would be unlikely to be rolled out nationwide at the same time due to the cost.zipmeister wrote:They are not worried about instant savings with mergers .In our area they are merging two offices and the savings wont really start for another 9 years with saving being fully achieved a whole 16 years after the merger.
If we were still publicy owned, the long term savings would be good, but we're not. We've been privatised, and I doubt any of our shareholders would be willing to wait 16 years for a return, unless of course they're after the town center and city centre sites, which is possible.

I don't get it why Tuesday off as I see it Tuesday light but we do shorter day Tuesday, and a long Wednesday.we have a busy Monday very busy Wednesday Thursday Friday and Saturday only because somewhere in the system mail must be held back on Tuesday be it tnt and the others ? If we had Tuesday off then the rest of the week would be unworkable ! But that's are management never done the job on delivery as for the union much the same before they do anything I think all of them do 6 month on delivery at a really of ice not ones in the city.

All of these points came up in a union meeting our office had last Tuesday. The meeting was for something completely unrelated but the local rep let it slip he'd head about the s**t storm on the horizon and everyone badgered him for the details.Postie45 wrote:is this just the rumour from one office, or has it been mentioned anywhere else ?

Those proposals sound about as popular as Donald Trump in an illegal immigrant refugee camp!! But Royal Mail can say whatever they want. They could put Laurel & Hardy on RMTV for us to watch as part of our Work Time Learning session if they want.
But actually getting everyone to agree and conform to everything Royal Mail propose is another matter....
We had a similar scenario whereby one of our senior managers wanted us all to sign out of the office and make sure that we all worked to our time. This manager got a Union Rep on board to try and get a local agreement. However, it never actually went ahead because they were clearly worried about the amount of mail and packets on busy days not being delivered because the majority of staff didn't want to work past 3pm (and that includes the runners who regularly take out extra work).
The biggest thing that is preventing Royal Mail from making the changes is US. Most of us are now working the longs and shorts with the times installed, and to be honest it works quite well. Our main focus should be getting at least 93% of 1st class letters delivered next day so that we don't get a hefty fine from Ofcom. So its good that we have still have a USO even though Royal Mail would love to be free from it. Did anyone mention in your meeting how Quality of Service would suffer from these proposals if they suddenly work them in the next 12 months?? Perhaps someone should mention that EE got fined a million quid for not adequately dealing with customer complaints last year??

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

how the hell can they do that? its a communication union ffs. RM can't force the cwu to keep info from its paying members. if that's happened it must've been sanctioned by union hierarchy.Pompey Boy wrote:Nothing compared with what is going on in Pompey. CWU have signed something to say that our reps can't tell us anything or they may be sacked. As you say we should be the most important people, but clearly we are not.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:Apart from No 1 which is a local issue Dingo has thrown scorn on most of those.
Chinese whispers, inconsistent briefings, information vacuum and no national communication, (except to reps) all seem to increase the nervousness of members. Perhaps we need an urgent communication release to the most important people, the membership, after all, we are going to be the most affected.

It's been mentioned on here before, they are called No Disclosure Agreements usually linked to what RM would call business sensitive discussions
