A judge has said he is ‘not impressed’ by people who tell the court they did not receive letters from probation. 
District Judge Barney McElholm said that Royal Mail are a ‘very reliable organisation. Certainly any bill that anyone sends me always arrived’.
The judge made the comment as 35-year-old Tomasz Korzeb appeared at the local magistrates court.
Korzeb, of Deramore Drive, Strathfoyle, pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife on November 25, last year.
Sentencing had been adjourned for a probation report, however Korzeb failed to attend the appointments for this to be prepared.
He claimed he did not receive the letters offering him appointments.
Derry Magistrates Court heard that Korzeb phoned police in the early hours of the morning to report he had ‘hit his wife’.
He said he had been out drinking and when he returned him he and his wife had an argument.
The 35-year-old threw a mobile phone at his wife, hitting her on the left hand side of her face.
She sustained bruising to her left eye and cheekbone.
The court heard the woman did not any action to be taken against her husband but he had made full admissions.
Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott told the court Korzeb ‘felt that bad’ about assaulting his wife he reported it to police.
