two tier pay deal?

Post by Tman »

Well done, did you work that one out yourself?
Indeed I did, unlike you it seems.
A pay rise is by its very definition an increase in pay, not an increase in hourly rate
So an increase in the hourly rate isn't an increase in pay? Really?

Only if it increases your pay and in this scenario where paid hours are reduced...well it doesn't so it isn't.
Come on Tman, you're better than this.

Only if the reduction of hours comes off the end of our delivery or it gives us a shorter Saturday. We shouldn't be expected to do the same amount of work in less time either

Think we need to be careful accepting a shorter working week. Say we accept a 37 hour week this time around then a 35 hour week next year and so on not only is the wage stagnating but within 3 or 4 years we will be down to 30 hours and part time with no wage rise to come for years.

This could also be pretty diversionary. If it's sold to part-timers as an hourly pay increase AND as more hours being available for overtime (as opposed to being made up to full-time,) that could lead to some hurt feelings.

I reckon you understand the maths perfectly well that a reduction in the working hours per week with no reduction in annual pay rate equates to a pay rise.

It may be different in your household. In mine it would be like this:

Me: I got a pay rise this year!
The Wife: Ooh! How much extra do you get?
Me: Err... Nothing extra exactly. I'm just at work less...
The Wife: Well that isn't a pay rise is it then!

I agree with the Mrs. This is no pay rise if that's what's being offered.

Some posters on here seem keen on a reduction in the working hours, but that aside, I never said it was good/satisfactory/well worth having/great news or any other positive adjective, but merely that it's a pay rise in that your hourly rate increases.
If nothing else, those who do O/T would see an increase in take home pay.

Given that the simplest and cheapest way for royal mail to provide a shorter working week and increase the hourly rate would be to remove our paid breaks it's something we should be wary of.

Would not be at all surprised if this turned out to be the actual DEAL!

How many in D/O's do you think actually take their M/R's Mon-Sat anyway...Less than 5%?

It wouldn't surprise me if we went to a 35 hour week (from 39) which would be an equivalent of 11.4% pay increase which is about par for a 3 year deal. Work load would stay the same so you'd be expected to claim overtime to complete on the busier days and there would be little chance of finishing early (for those of us that do).

In 3 years RM would almost have a totally part time work force and the "11.4% in real terms" would become a significant pay cut for the rest of your employment.

Very wise move RM - many foolish people would go for it!
"expected to claim overtime to complete on the busier days" but they won't pay overtime on busier days, instead saying that you're inefficient if you can't complete.
"11.4% in real terms" means no increased pay until 2019.

two tier pay deal?t

All of this is absolute rubbish. No truth in any of this at all.

There is a National Briefing next weds as tensions are rising over Royal Mail's strategy , Unagreed VRs etc. The CWU are consulting our legal experts whether Royal Mail are breaking the legally binding Agenda for Growth Agreement.

In terms of Pay Talks these have not even started. The reason the union moved pay talks from October to April many years ago is RPI is normally higher in April. So the formal negotiations do not start in January.

There is going to be a pay , pension and new Royal Mail Strategy policy forum in March which will allow Branch's to set policy over what the pay claim will be. Equally what should not be included.

Now Royal Mail have not at anytime said they want to withdraw paid meal reliefs. Regardless of that the CWU has conference policy that paid meal reliefs must be maintained.

Now in terms of a Shorter working week well the unions aim has always been to get to a 35 hour gross working week , this would include your meal reliefs. We currently have a net working week of 35 hours 30 mins minus your meal relief.

Every hour off the working week is worth 2.2% on the pay bill as our pay remains the same and part timers increase.

It is high time we increased meal relief time but that it became mandatory obligation. With the introduction of production control and the clocking in system being introduced from later this year this could be possible as it will record all tasks performed.

Equally we should for the first time since the way forward increase individuals annual leave allocations. To ensure they have more time off work.

There is no possibility of a two tier deal one for processing , RDC ,MDEC , LGV. and another for Delivery Staff.

Delivery Staff already have with the delivery supplement being part of their basic pay an high basic than processing , RDC and MDEC staff and secondly there are 88 000 delivery workers and less than 20 thousand of the rest so delivery can always out vote the rest.

Equally in another thread someone has said the CWU have agreed 6 hour delivery spans. Again complete rubbish and untrue.
Equally Royal Mail do not require this at this stage it is only when there is no indoor work and is not linked to one wave introduction. It is part of Royal Mail strategy and it is not acceptable and the CWU are opposing it.

This is the position. No doubt we could all believe rumours and scare stories but the reality is don't negotiate Pay before you spend thousands of pounds having a pay policy forum to set policy.
