Embarrassed onlookers say the situation is like a scene from a Carry On film with women “wearing less than some ladies do on their wedding night”

The 'pyjamagate' row at a school has reached a local post office - where customers have been asked to stop wearing nighties.

Horndale sub post office in Newton Aycliffe, near Darlington, is like 'a scene from a Carry On film' with young women in revealing nightwear queuing alongside pensioners, according to regulars.

One told the Mirror: "I've seen lasses in the shop wearing less than some ladies do on their wedding night."

Customers asked the owner, dad-of-three Gurmit Somal, 40, to intervene with the nightie-wearing women and pyjama-sporting men.

So he erected a sign saying "No nightwear to be worn in the shop please."

A spokesman for the post office said: "It was getting ridiculous. You would see a queue of customers, many of them older men wearing ties and then in the middle there would be a woman in a short nightie.

"My customers were complaining to me saying that they didn't want their children going in for sweets and seeing people dressed that way, they weren't properly covered up for a start and also people felt it set a poor example.

"It's very similar to the situation they have got at the school, we can understand where the head's coming from."

Locals told how customers turned up nighties, dressing gowns and pyjamas 'at all times of year, and no matter what the weather'.

"You have to have some kind of standards and getting dressed when you wake up is one of them," added the spokesman.

"I don't know why people around here like to go out on their nightwear, you wouldn't do it in a big city. I never see someone walking through the centre of Newcastle on a busy shopping day wearing their dressing gown so why do it here?"


Since Mr Somal put up the notice last year dress standards have improved - but still leave 'a lot to be desired', according to people who live nearby.

Margaret Roberts, 62, said: "Sometimes it would look like a Carry On film with young ladies in flimsy nighties parading around without a care in the world.

"It's as if they'd got up and forgotten to put their clothes on and they they didn't seem bothered who saw them either. I'm pleased the postmaster took a stand, he's done his bit for common sense and decency."

Retired draughtsman Len Carter, 78, said: "When I get up in the morning I put on a shirt and tie.

“I don't have to be going anywhere special but I don't feel properly dressed without a tie, I think it's just my generation though.

"If you'd gone walking in the street in your pyjamas in my day people would have thought you'd gone crackers, they'd have been saying 'old so and so has lost his marbles.'

Karen Routh, 49, mother of pupil Holly, 8, wore pyjamas to school today after she was running late due to feeling unwell, she doesn't see a problem with wearing pyjamas to school in an emergency, at Skerne Park Primary School in Darlington whose head teacher, Katie Chisholm, sent parents a letter home about wearing pyjamas to pick up their children from school.

"Now it's just normal to wander about in your nightie. I've seen lasses in the shop wearing less than some ladies do on their wedding night.

"The postmaster and that head teacher are showing that even in this day and age some folk still have standards."

The Mirror told how a defiant mum flouted a school's pyjama ban - but only because she got stuck on the loo.

Karen Routh, 49, arrived at Darlington's Skerne Park Academy in pyjamas as she walked daughter Holly, eight, to school.

She risked the wrath of head Kate Chisholm who sent a letter to all parents asking them to set an example to their kids by NOT wearing pyjamas to pick them up and drop them off.

The letter sparked a debate over suitable attire for the school run, with some parents accusing her of 'snobbery'.
