Postal workers in Liverpool have voted unanimously to end their unofficial strike, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) said.

More than 800 post staff made the decision at The Liner Hotel in the city. CWU official Mark Walsh said: "We are obviously glad to get our members back to work, get the public's mail out and keep negotiations about working hours on the table."

Postal workers in the city started their unofficial strike on Wednesday last week. It had affected 21 sorting offices across Merseyside.

Meanwhile, fresh talks are being held between both sides in the national dispute over pay, jobs and pensions.

A proposed deal was thrashed out last Friday between leaders of the CWU and Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier, which included a 6.9 per cent pay rise over two years.

The union's postal executive met on Monday and Tuesday to discuss the deal but failed to reach a decision on whether to recommend acceptance in a ballot of the CWU's 130,000 members.

The union said in a statement: "Further negotiations took place last week between the CWU and Royal Mail's chief executive, Adam Crozier. Following those negotiations, proposed terms to settle the dispute were presented to the postal executive over the last two days.

"The TUC general secretary, Brendan Barber, has now invited both parties for a further meeting so that the CWU can clarify the remaining outstanding issues."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "Royal Mail has agreed to meet with the union to clarify outstanding issues - but the agreement reached and endorsed last Friday by CWU general secretary Billy Hayes and deputy general secretary Dave Ward stands."

The national union have let Liverpool down badly, and it seems like they're going to ley us all down now.

Will we see widespread wildcat action on Monday with the introduction of network changes? Delivery offices have in the main meekly accepted the changes (including my own office I'm ashamed to say), can't see the Mail Centres being so aquiescent, hope not anyway.

Back to square one now.

We can defy the national union, we've done it in the past and we can do it again.

Congratulations to the Scousers for showing us how to be a fighting union again, shame on the Union bosses for selling them out.

Lets just hope our collegues at Liverpool & London can earn some of their lost days pay back........back in 1986 when we were out for over 2 weeks it took months for some collegues to get their finances back on track.I really hope its good news from union HQ re-the deal,if another round of strikes are announced it'll be an even bigger burden on those who have been out on wildcat strikes.................
