ASHTEAD'S post delivery office could be shut under new Royal Mail proposals.
The company has announced it is considering moving the 20 staff at the office in The Street into the Leatherhead delivery office instead.
Staff were told of the plans on Monday morning, with managers advising them the village's branch could be shut by Easter.
A member of staff, who the Advertiser has agreed not to name, said: "They have said there won't be any job losses because we will all be sent to the Leatherhead office but there are people who work here who don't drive so I don't see how they can move.
"Also there are some roles they won't need two of.
"I just think the residents of Ashtead need to know. This is going to upset a lot of people. Our rounds will be much later. The post would be arriving about two hours later and that would affect local businesses.
"It was such a shock. That's why I'm so angry, because there was no warning for us at all. I can't believe it, I don't understand they're doing it. They say it's to save money but they will have to spend a lot on the Leatherhead office if they do move us."
Royal Mail has confirmed that it is "exploring an option to relocate Ashtead delivery office", stating that the move would be part of "work to increase the efficiency of its operations".
But the firm denied that its delivery service to Ashtead would be affected if the move goes ahead.
Spokeswoman Sally Hopkins said: "No final decision has been made yet. This office move would improve facilities and safety standards for our people. The yard at Ashtead has insufficient space for our red vehicles and can get congested at busy times when our postmen and women are loading and unloading mail.
"The Leatherhead delivery office is currently undergoing some refurbishment. This will improve working conditions for our people and ensure we have sufficient space to incorporate our delivery operation from Ashtead into this site if we decide to go ahead.
"There will be no impact on deliveries to our customers and the postmen and women who work in the Ashtead delivery office will continue to serve the community, delivering a high quality service to our customers.
"There will be no job losses and we reimburse our staff for any extra mileage incurred by any change to their place of work."
