Royal Mail delivered 7.5m extra Christmas presents this year

Royal Mail have released a trading update for the nine months leading up to the 27th December and it looks like they had a good Christmas, even better than last year’s strong performance.

Royal Mail Christmas homeRoyal Mail’s Christmas saw them deliver 130 million parcels during December. That’s 6% more than the previous Christmas, in hard numbers 7.5 million more parcels than in 2014 which is a bigger volume increase than that reported by any competitor.

Overall parcel volumes for the 9 months are up 4%, with revenues up 1%. Parcel volume growth continued to be driven by Royal Mail account parcels, which benefited from recent new contract wins, import parcels, and Parcelforce Worldwide, which saw volumes increase by 16%. Royal Mail say that growth in these channels has more than offset the tough trading environment in consumer/SME and export parcels.

Royal Mail say that letters also had a good performance against the backdrop of structural decline. Volumes are down 3% at Q3 ahead of Royal Mail’s projected range of 4-6% annual decline.

Royal Mail also saw strong performance in Europe from their GLS division with volumes up 11% and revenues up 10% at Q3.

Good to see Royal Mail holding their own, now we just have to wait until April to see what their positive trading update translates to in annual price rises.

Over the same period parcels were up 4%, it also says. I suppose you are saying that because letters were down then mail was down. I don't think that's true. The overall figure was an increase in mail volume (parcels included) and it's the parcels that take more time and resources than the letters do.

On an average day I deliver approx 1200 letters so a 3% decrease would mean 36 fewer letters.
On an average day I deliver 50 packets so a 4% increase would mean 2 more packets.

I don't disagree that packets need more resourcing etc but as to it being clear that mail was up ......?

Does a parcel include the 'large letter' format which covers about 50% of the packet mail (750g - 35x25x2.5) ?
e.g. cds, dvds, books, cables, t-sirts etc

Ok, so we are going to have to differ in opinions yet again. If I put an extra 36 letters into the frame today, I would actually expect that to take me considerably less time to deliver than an extra 2 attendance calls.

Unless it were a very peculiar pile of 36 letters, I would expect to be walking to the vast majority of those letterboxes anyway. It's probably unlikely in my experience that I would have been already chapping on those 2 doors with the extra parcels.

As I said I don't disagree that the extra packets require more resourcing but the maths remains the same.
The total figure is a drop in mail.

and we still managed all the Christmas cards too.
