Royal Mail 'must be allowed to grow'

The CWU sent out a strongly worded statement today in response to Royal Mail’s latest trading update, which indicated improvement in key areas of the business.

Deputy general secretary (postal) Terry Pullinger said that the announcement demonstrated that, “once again, postal workers have delivered steady and tangible business improvement as well as delivering an excellent service to the British public.

"Not only should our members continue to be rewarded for their immense contribution during very challenging times, "but Royal Mail should also be allowed to grow," he continued.

Terry explained that a successful strategy for growth involves "continuing to deliver the universal six-day-a -week delivery service right across the whole day, integrating that service with new product innovations in keeping with the public’s modern demands, diversifying into new operations and re-integration in partnership with the Post Office.”

These “natural synergies” can be realised in the interests of our nation’s social, industrial and commercial, he urged.

CWU general secretary Dave Ward also backed the call for a more positive approach to the future, insisting: "We need to see investment back into frontline employees and services and ensure Royal Mail has a long- term future as the People's Post.”

And he also strongly supported the growing calls for full re-integration of the industry, saying: “To build on this it's time for the Post Office to be brought back in house like Romec."
