Royal Mail respond to Camborne delivery office mismanagement claims

DISGRUNTLED postal workers claim a Royal Mail depot in Camborne is being "shambolically managed".

In a letter sent to the West Briton, signed "concerned staff member of Camborne Delivery Office", eight serious claims are made regarding failure by the management at the Royal Mail Delivery Office on Chapel Street.

They say the only option has been to contact the paper after "various letters and concerns" raised with the management had been ignored.

Their accusations include doors to an office containing the safe and special deliveries being left insecure to reports stating mail had been delivered when it was still in the office awaiting delivery.

Further assertions have been made of staff being locked in the office by managers who secure the external yard gate with the only other exit, a fire exit, partly blocked by "an overflow of delivery trolleys".

The string of criticisms extend to management also allowing different staff permission to use log in details of other employees for a device (known as a Postal Digital Association or PDA) used when customers sign electronically for delivery to a "constant failure" to complete return to work interviews within a reasonable period.

However a spokesman for Royal Mail refuted all the allegations and said it provided a "consistently good service to the area" and the Government's Universal Service Obligation (USO).

Its statement read: "Our customers' mail is supervised by local management at all times and use of PDAs is also closely monitored by local management to protect the integrity of our customers' mail. We absolutely refute the allegation that staff have been locked in the office.

"There has been one instance where a return to work interview was not complete due to the individual in question leaving the business immediately after the scheduled date for the interview."

The company spokesman added it was "disappointed" about the comments but committed to "resolving any local issues in close liaison with our union".
