Royal Mail concern as residents in Crediton say their letters arrived opened

ROYAL MAIL says they are "extremely concerned" following claims that residents in Crediton are having their Christmas post opened.

Several residents in both Copplestone and Lapford have claimed they had received opened mail.

Sally Louise Stone who lives at Spinning Path Gardens, Crediton says she has found opened letters on multiple occasions: "A couple of times I have had mail open it looked like it had been sliced open by a knife or scissors.

"I had ordered some trading cards for my son on eBay. The envelope had been well sealed with tape but the side had been sliced open, I was thankful that all the cards were still in the envelope.

"I figured somebody may have thought they were gift voucher cards or something. We've also had birthday cards sliced open too."

Another resident, Pip Carter who lives in Newcombes added: "It happened over the Christmas period two weeks ago.

"Two of the cards that were sent to me had been opened.

"I did think 'oh, why would or should it be opened?'

"Luckily nobody sent me or my family any money. There was no need for it to be tampered with.

"The mail is to me and my family not the post man or woman."

Royal Mail has responded to the claims saying: "Royal Mail is extremely concerned to hear of problems some residents have reported with their mail in the Crediton area.

"We deliver millions of items of mail every day and the vast majority arrive at the correct destination quickly and efficiently. If anyone has any queries about their post, they should contact Royal Mail Customer Services on 03457 740740 in the first instance, so the enquiry can be properly logged and investigated."

They went on to add that senders should 'always ensure that their items are wrapped well and that tracked services are used for items of value."

It's normally the sorting machine that doesn't that.

Yes we all know that, but Joe Public thinks most of us are a band of thieves,and amazingly every birthday card and Christmas card contained a ten pound note.

The sorting machine lifts the flaps up on many cards, especially when they've only been licked at the tip of the apex/flap. It does NOT slice envelopes along the edge.

When it is raining and an envelope is resting against an arm it will appear as if it has been sliced open along its edge.

It happens all the time - mostly with birthday cards etc where the envelope is poor quality and the card inside acts like a 'scissor' edge. Also, I'd expect it with some trading cards stuffed into an envelope from ebay.

Is this a real story or just a load of uninformed rubbish?
