Postal staff work round-the-clock to get mail delivered

FROM a tremendous increase in parcel deliveries to sorting out many thousands of Christmas cards each day, the staff at the Omagh Delivery Office are working round-the-clock to ensure that all of our festive post makes its way safely to our homes in time for Christmas.

With more than 48,000 items expected to be delivered throughout the Omagh district area every day during the Christmas period, our 75 trusty postmen and women in Omagh see an increase of almost 90 per-cent of mail delivered.

To accommodate the increase in festive mail, an extra five post vans are needed on top of the existing fleet of 42 vehicles.

“The staff that work for me in here in Omagh do a tremendous job,” said Paul Devlin, who has been Omagh’s Delivery Office manager for eight years. “They work very long hours over the Christmas period.

“They come in very early in the morning, some from as early as 6.30am and many don’t go home until late in the evening.

“We even put a few staff on a night duty over Christmas because it becomes so busy.”

As well as an increase in large letter deliveries at Christmas time, Paul said that within recent years there has been both a massive growth in parcels and packet deliveries.

“Every morning during December each one of the 50 frames in the Omagh Delivery Office has been filled with all kinds of post – from big parcels to smaller Christmas cards,” the Killyclogher man said.

“But it doesn’t take our postmen and women long to sort it all out, and by 10 o’clock everyone is out for delivery in their designated areas.

“So by the end of the day, the sorting office is practically empty. And all of this starts over again the next day.”

He continued, “Our staff realise that the public out there are waiting for their post at Christmas time.

“Perhaps someone is waiting to receive a Christmas card from a relative in Australia or have bought their partner a present online.

“As a high percentage of the post at Christmas time includes gifts for loved ones, they understand that it’s really important to fulfil the needs of the customer.”

Believing that “no-one else can do it like Royal Mail”, Paul explained that this year’s increase of staff in the Omagh office means that local customers are able to get their mail that bit earlier this Christmas.

Paul concluded, “The men and women are all very busy, but they all really do pull out the stops at this time of the year.

“We’re very proud to deliver to every house in and around the Omagh area, and we love doing what we do.

“There’s no-one that lets me down in Omagh, and we’re hoping for another successful Christmas this year once again in the sorting office.”

The last posting date for Second Class mail is Saturday December 19, and First Class needs to be posted by Monday December 21. After that, Special Deliveries can be posted up to Wednesday December 23 for Christmas Eve delivery.

Call that early ? My rural used to start at 04.00. ( Yes, it was some years ago....).
