this was once brought up and a lad had to really push for an answer, they eventually said knock on someones door and ask to use theirs![]()
only other option is to break off earlier and lose a further 20/30 minutes + further arguing time (if there's a manager still there?)
out of interest, did the union help fight your cause?
My managers number is not in the PDA and I can't remember it off hand - would it work even if I could? Seems not everyone of them has that facility.

Re: sacked while still on sick
Every pda has the facility to call 3 numbers 999, breakdown and your delivery office, every single pda that rm use have this ability it's just a matter of being correctly trained how to use the pda which everyone should have been otherwise they could not have correctly signed off your delivery office revisionmasterblaster wrote:zx135 wrote:Simple use the pda, every postie is supposed to have one now and everyone of them has the facility to contact your officekorky wrote:one thing that puzzles me when this situation comes up, what if you don't have a mobile or no credit?

Re: sacked while still on sick
One of the very ugly sides about this job
I mean suppose, just suppose, the OP did follow the overrunning procedure, went to the gaffer and insisted that they only wanted to work their hours for the day and also asked if the gaffer could take some mail or packets off their delivery because they knew they were going to be well over their time otherwise?? Maybe he/she was in the managers office with only the manager present when he/she said that. Theres no witnesses other than the manager. Suppose that the OP also tried ringing the office on that day and nobody answers (It happens, especially at Xmas time or because managers themselves are out doing deliveries). As for PDAs, Ive yet to get one that has more than 2 hours charge on it and even I wouldn't know how to contact anyone on it either!
So if the guy was in the CWU then what would the Union actually do to get their job back? Im curious.....Would they see if it was a regular occurrence or a one-off? If the postie could not get in touch with the office for whatever reason even though they were told to do so and then the postie brought back, say, a bag of mail and then managed to inform a manager - what would happen?? There are still hours left in the day to deliver the mail even if the OP does not want to work past his hours! A manager could probably try and 'blackmail' the OP into working past his hours to deliver the mail or face the sack. But then again, if the office was going to sack the OP for wilful delay anyway, then why not sack the Line Manager for wilful delay as well?? After all, they are responsible for everything that happens in their section. If a delivery 'fails' for whatever reason then it is surely their responsibility as well!

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

you can make notes now.....i presume they sent you some form of literature to say you can appeal their decision?
if not then ring acas and or the cab......they will guide you.
but really you should have joined the union.
