I think the suggestion is you will lose your prep time as well. I don't know these machines well enough to say whether that is far fetched or not.
It's possible that we may lose some prep time if it was possible to automatically merge letters, flats and D2D(unlikely with present technology and cost limitations) but the idea that you will simply turn up at a DO and load your van is ridiculous scaremongering.

We have to face facts, reducing workload means less work, no amount of shuffling the pact can prevent job losses due to a reduction in work ( perhaps a shorter week) so the real question is do we want to have more jobs but most of them part time, less jobs but most of them full-time or can we find a balance that also leaves us with a physically sustainable level of workload into your 60s and beyond.

6+ delivery spans are nonsense thought up by fat, middle-aged men( our representatives lol) who don't have to do them.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Or a shorter working week with the same pay more pay per hour if we can get 6 hours a week less for the same pay over three years we would boost our hourly rate up, but we need the equipment for such a thing to work like clock in clock out and if you go over you get paid never more would the incentive be made to make the job's do able for all. If we can achieve this it may be the biggest and best terms and conditions we have ever known in the history of postmen/women in the United Kingdom.

today the branch secretary and area rep came to the office to clear up some '' misunderstandings'' about this email that was sent to bob Gibson. they took us downstairs for the talk but we only had about 20-25 mins allowed, courtesy of management. they said it was very very early days and nothing is set in stone. the ideas they put forward where simply because the ball needs be started rolling. it will be a nationwide thing and the union needs to get the members involved because they need a strategy to deal with RMs plans which most definitely involves these new machines. the union says they can do nothing to stop RM introducing these new machines. which will come in over the next few years ( about 3-5). they said it had already happened all over Europe, including Germany, Sweden, Holland etc. Germany for instance has went from 80,000 D.O.s to 50,000. similar figures with the rest. the machines sort 95% of letters/flats/small packets, and can collate and shrink wrap D2Ds so they come as a single item even if there's multiple up to 17. we will not need prep frames, the mail will come in trays, already sequenced. this means they won't need as many D.O.s so this is where redundancies will come in. they said for instance, when we go to 1 wave, we may not get the mail til 9.30, so this could trigger a mass exodus of people who have kids at school and in nursery etc as it will no longer be family friendly. there will be practically no indoor work so the deliveries will probably need to be extended. they stress as part of any negotiations the MTSF will remain so the redundancies will NOT be compulsory. we didn't have time to go into much detail really but to say we were disgruntled is an understatement. its going to be an uncertain future.

the branch have been informed by our office via email that there is around about 50-60 people considering coming out off the union en masse, due to the way this has all come about, and feel misrepresented by our union. the branch has responded by organising a meeting with us in January in which the divisional rep and ''Bob Gibson'' himself are to attend to put things straight, in the meantime can the exodus be put on hold until then and maybe reconsidered after this meeting.

Well in my experience the only time the full time union bods shift their backsides IS when people threaten to leave - once the meeting takes place, promises made it's back to the same old same old.

I don't think there's anyway you can "put things straight" about a 6 hour delivery.

yes ask him what kind of membership he thinks the cwu will have if they allow 6 hour deliveries & a 5-6pm finish time?
Also what are the cwu going to do about the current unbearable workload we face on a daily basis & that many of their members are physically falling apart as its impossible longterm to keep this up. Thanks :thumbup

Allow! the CWU can and no doubt will oppose any move to a late finish but if Royal Mail truly want it they will get it, they will just offer enough incentives till the workforce accept
