Re: future of deliveries. email to bob gibson
as for ideas, I think if the union looked at a 36hr week it would be a start. they keep saying theres not enough work. it would certainly hamper any plans of 6hr spans.

Given that each hour off the working week is approximately a 2.5% pay rise, a 3 hour reduction would be a massive pay rise.daveyeff wrote:as for ideas, I think if the union looked at a 36hr week it would be a start.

Re: future of deliveries. email to bob gibson
It amounts to about a 7.9% increase over 3 years if my maths is correct - not much less than we got financially in the last 3 year deal. (9.3%?)daveyeff wrote:piddley over 3yrs though
It would basically mean next to no financial improvement in a full timers take home pay for 3 years - which might be OK if inflation remains around 0% for the next 3 years.

as opposed to 6hr deliveries and massive job losses I supposed it would be accepted. perhaps our union could get that and a little more.

A 33 hour working week without breaks or 35-1/2 with breaks would also help make part time staff being made up it would distance us from the living wage as well. Sometimes you have to cut your cloth to suit your earnings but you could always do some docket if your short of cash. It would help royal mail have a fitter workforce and have fixed costs for the future we just need a good deal this time.

Re: future of deliveries. email to bob gibson
Look I have not met one senior rep who supports Royal Mail's business's strategy to move to a later delivery window. However the fact is unlike posters on here who can shout and scream no and think that Royal Mail will change their plans they are clearly wrong.
Royal Mail plans are driven by the fact that more and more big customers want later acceptance times into Mail centres up to 3 in the morning which means you cannot provide delivery the next day and there the growth in parcel delivery is moving torwards an evening service which is when workers come in from work 18:00 - 2200.
So Royal Mail wants to introduce more intonation which removes all your manual work with mancines which have already been trailed in Exeter.
The plan is to deploy their strategy over 5 years but with change taking place over the next 5 years. In fact Royal Mail have the capacity if they want too introduce.one wave in 50% of delivery offices in the UK as early as January! Basically all that means is you would not get any sequencing till around 9 with only manual work in your office before think what that will do.
This is not an issue which anyone want to tackle but it is a real issue nevertheless. This is the facts not dreamed up nonsense as some others quoted. The idea is too have significant less offices and less walks but over longer spans meaning less jobs. Only the CWU will change this, no one else ! Remember that fact

So the 3 and 4pm latest deliveries are under threat, that obvious.
They want longer and less duties - are they just going to impose them or will there be a real trial of the impact 6 hours or more of walking in an 7 hr 48 working day.
My main concerns are will they plan for fatigue and allow recuperation or will they just pull a figure of 2.1 mph (when its really around 3.8mph) out of the air again.
Will they allow for a return to office for a mail relief half way through the delivery span. I doubt it as it would reduce the items per minute efficiency.
Is the Union more concerned about protecting FT positions rather than the quality of employment. I really think that unquestionable protection of FT jobs versus the quality of work life balance needs to addressed now, and it needs to involve ordinary members DIRECTLY.
I also humbly suggest that anyone who enters negotiations thinking that 6 hours outdoors mainly walking, even with a trolley is acceptable in any form, be they RM or CWu, should attempt to do it for a 2 - 3 weeks.
At some point RM and the CWU will have to come up with something really innovative, because adding more delivery points and more hours to delivery isn't innovative, its down right stupid and dangerous.

Re: future of deliveries. email to bob gibson
TBT the simple strategy from Royal Mail is to have no indoor work and move to almost out door model 10 to 1700 delivery window with only tracked , firms and specials getting an earlier delivery. The plan is to collate d2d with a trial taking place in the new year.
So the simple answer is what if this does happen will protect Jobs regardless of Whether they are Full time or part time. The delivery span which Royal Mail are talking is two wave delivery break in the middle. Remember when we had two deliveries we had a two deliveries we had a first delivery of 2 and half hours than a break and then ips and prep and a second delivery of 2.5 hours.
We can look at the Fratigue study but I have seen the initial results and they were not great against Royal Mail's plan plus other postal administration delivery over 5 or 6 hours and in Norways case sick and back injuries have decreased.
Look I am opposed to the Strategy and will fight it but with more and more companies demanding later acceptance into Mail Centres our traditional start times and delivery window is going to be under pressure.

So how will this effect deep rural sub offices with 5- 5:30 delivery spans at the moment ?. , some in my office are 55 miles of driving .
Guys this week have been going 1:30 over each day so that's nearly all their hours just on delivery , mainly down to packets / parcels

if we go to 6 hour plus deliveries everyday you can kiss goodbye to any union!dingo wrote:TBT the simple strategy from Royal Mail is to have no indoor work and move to almost out door model 10 to 1700 delivery window with only tracked , firms and specials getting an earlier delivery. It would be so hazardous to health it would almost be criminal! I dont care how they do it in norway, their terrain is much different to ours with most boxes being on the front on properties, plus they have a population of 5 million, the uk has 65 MILLION!!!! How can you even compare or take this crap on-board?
Another red flag is being in unsafe areas in the dark like high rise flats in not so nice areas! This would be very unsafe in my opinion.
The union have got a big choice to make, lose their membership within 5 years by letting this sort of rubbish come in or grow a backbone & fight not only for jobs but QUALITY OF JOBS!!!!!!!! This is a massive thing the cwu like to brush under the carpet, its not great to protect jobs if those jobs are awful to body & mind! Its stupid!
1st you fight to get a job that someone can do long term then you protect it!
Good luck getting your membership to vote this crap in. Ive got a feeling each unit will become its own union as time goes on like we have seen lately with walkouts, but im not sure if this is what the higher arky in the cwu want, so they can earn massive money off our hard work while doing very little besides trying to help a dying labour party that is as out of touch with the working public as the cwu is with what its posties are going through everyday!
Plus 3 years ago the cwu's big thing was no compulsory redundancies but with these plans it seems unavoidable that there will be mass compulsory redundancies! So is ok now as most customers want later delivery times?
And 2.5 hour delivery's followed by another 2.5 hour delivery back in the day? are you having a laugh! Try 2 hour delivery's followed by 10 letters on the 2nd delivery if you were unlucky!
I suppose the cwu will be telling us next, in order to protect our fantastic jobs they will have to agree to no finish time & annualized hours but dont worry they will give us a little trolley to drag along & a little bonus to make things easier. Merry xmas

Re: future of deliveries. email to bob gibson
With a reduction in the working week for the same pay would off set RM's plans and make full and part time more equal and more overtime opportunities for those who need more money. As for a two delivery model with return to office will kill the runners off as would clocking in and out and this would also impact upon the corrupt management bonus culture that has been allowed to flourish. With a 33 hour working week for the same pay we could reduce the out door element to 2 hour spans with a return to office with a 30 minute meal relief. Next years pay and CONDITIONS deal will ever be more important we get the right deal this time.

Re: future of deliveries. email to bob gibson
Look what I said I am opposed to their Delivery Strategy.
However the model they are looking would have delivery methods ! It would no longer be paired vans but one person per van. Lots less delivery offices with no frames in DOs as all work will come in pre walk sequence apart from parcels.
Even with a Shorter working week how will you protect jobs if you do not a longer delivery ? Think about it minus meal relief most Full OPGs works around 35 hours depending on your attendance pattern !
With hardly any indoor work apart from loading your van , collecting reg etc how will you split your hours up if you do just a 4 hour delivery ?
I think the key is we have to oppose the introduction of the new large letter automation systems which removes all flats and smaller parcels from being manually done ! Equally that will stop the attack of start times ! However we cannot also turn away work from the bigger companies who want to have items to be put in the mail centres at 3 in the morning when most mail centres do not have any thing in after 7 in the evening with a national network it will not get the same day with the current delivery window !
Remember the strategy is over 5 years , rural deliveries will be different as will offices to remote from where the large letter machines will be put !
The immediate challenge is that Royal Mail could as from January switch to one wave of traffic in over 50% of offices in the UK so this would mean your office will have only parcels and flats in your office before 0900 which means all your sequencing will not be there for you to throw up ! This will obviously be game changing ahead of next years business plan and indeed ahead of the pay negotiations ! We can all say what we don't want but what do we want is much harder !

Re: future of deliveries. email to bob gibson
What do we want as a collective? Dunno about that, but what I want is to turn up to work at 6am, sort the prios, etc which have just arrived and then bundle up and get straight out on delivery, probably at about 7 to 7:30am. How is that possible? Well, I return from delivery around 12:00 and then spend the rest of my hours throwing up all the mail that eventually turned up during the day, at whatever time, ready for the next morning's delivery.
It's a bit of an arse-about day compared to how we have it now, but I can see many benefits, especially for the deliverers.
If they do manage to get all the mail sequenced then you won't have the prep at the end of the day tho to make my plan work. But that's a big if isn't it?
