Hi there,
I had my interview back in September, the interview went well and I waited patiently for the outcome, I was told it would be a couple of days later. After 3 weeks of endless emails and phone calls I had heard nothing, I assumed I had been unsuccessful. I continued searching for work, and booked a family holiday to France 4-12th of December. After nearly a month, I get an email from RM offering me the job, great! I accepted, and during all the checks and back and forth they asked if I had holiday booked, I told them, they said ask manager on day one, so it can be honoured.
Today was my first day, and my manager has flat out refused my holiday, despite the fact it was booked before I even knew the outcome of my interview, and before I had accepted the offer. Is there anything I can do? It has all been paid for, and I can't let the family down, help!

Re: Holiday Refused
I am almost 100% certain the manager simply can't refuse you holiday so long as you made it quite clear that you'd a holiday booked before accepting the job & you wouldn't be available. I forget what the exact term is but I'm almost certain it must be honoured & can't simply be refused by a manager.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Thanks for the reply guys. He said he would see what he could do, but couldn't make any promises, it didn't sounds very hopeful! I will speak to him tomorrow and see what the verdict is, then approach my rep if necessary.

Re: Holiday Refused
I'll speak to my rep today. It's not really how I wanted to start my employment at Royal Mail, but I can't cancel the holiday, and I've done everything I can, I don't think I'm being treated fairly. I'm a part time 20 hour man, so I'm sure it won't be too hard to get it covered.

Re: Holiday Refused
Well my manager didn't make any effort to speak to me today, or get in touch to let me know his decision on my holiday. I have sent an email to myapplication@royalmail.com, does anyone have an email address for HR?
Cheers

Re: Holiday Refused
You should seek him out tomorrow morning & make it quite clear to him you won't be in on those dates, that you accepted the job via e-mail, informed them of the holiday & took the job on the basis that your pre-booked holiday would be honoured. If you've the e-mails that include this I'd even print them out and bring them in.
Or as others have said, go find your rep, explain the situation to him & get him to have a word.
See for this kind of thing, my advice would be go speak to him/her yourself & make sure it gets sorted there & then. This sort of "I'll see what I can do", or "I'll speak to you closer to date" is a load of nonsense.

Re: Holiday Refused
Thanks for the reply.
I wanted to sort it out with him, amicably, especially as it could just be a clerical error and he was never informed. But it horrible to have it hanging over me, I just want to get it resolved, so I think I don't have much choice but to speak to my rep.
I will go and find him tomorrow, I have the emails, I will print them off. I replied to the offer with the dates of the holiday, so I couldn't have possibly told them any sooner! I don't want to be in a position where I have to choose between this job, or letting my family down and losing all that money.
