Working Hours

Post by EssexMail »

Hi all

Was looking at some of the job descriptions and working hours and wonder if someone can give me some information please

How do the shifts work with regards to Saturdays please? My wife works Saturdays and as we have four children Its easier with regards to child care if Im about so would be really interested in knowing how the rotas are arranged eg can someone work out how many Saturdays they will have off?

Im not work shy, Im happy to graft and put in as many hours as Im asked to do during the week but planning on a Saturday is something I would need to do if possible

Hope someone can advise

Many kind thanks

It would be easier for you to plan to work Saturdays I'm afraid , take any Saturday's off as a bonus.

The first couple of years after I started the only Saturday's off I had were holidays.

Hi

Thanks for the info :)

What is a typical Saturday times wise for someone if they were on a 25 hour a week contact. Tried to do some research and Saturdays looked like 9.30 - 2.30?
Or can the starts be earlier and finish earlier?

Many thanks

I have exactly the same problem EssexMail. My husband works shifts and Saturdays are a nightmare.

My hours were advertised as 09.30 to 14.30 Wednesday to Saturday but that was a load of rubbish as they want me in at 07.30 and on heavy days I'm not booking off until 15.30. I've had one Saturday off and that was annual leave.

Peshwaarinan,

I know what you mean, you have to have b@11s of steel to stand up to the lino's and say
my contracted hours are so and so and that's what I'm working.

For myself it doesn't matter too much, kids at secondary school, no rush to get home or
else I'd have to cook the tea so I can go over but for those who need to get home
on time, the pressure from managers to 'see how much you can do' can be intimidating.

Glad to see your're (mostly) enjoying it as we both bit the bullet around about the same time.

Hiya, YB

Yes it's going really well! I've never asked to cut off but I think I will on Saturday as my husband is working and I'll have to pay a babysitter as my mum's away. I will feel really awkward doing it though and my partner won't be very happy as he'll probably end up finishing my round off. So much for a 5 hour day! I love the job though and my customers are so nice. Just hope I don't get moved x

Think it depends on your office/managers. Quite a few people at ours only work their contracted hours. Doesn't seem to be a problem.
Jobs seem to vary according to DO as well. Round us they are all seem to be advertised as Weds to Sat 20 or 24 hours. Other areas I've seen are 5 days out of 6, rotational day off.
I've been here a couple of months, my contract is Weds to Sat 20 hours. They wanted me to work full-time 6 days a week and I gave it a go for a while but then decided it was too much. Just said I didn't want to do it, that I didn't mind going over hours but only wanted to work my contracted days. They were fine with it. If ever I need to be finished on time I let them know and it's worked out on the day. To be fair we have a really great rep who is always there to sort things out for us if need be.
Hope you are successful soon. I'm loving it - it's worth hanging on for!!

Only on the job a couple of months but already had a Saturday day-off (not requested). My DO is only small and the DOM seems to play as fair as he can.

Other Posties tell me to expect a Saturday every 4-6 weeks. I am happy with that if it works out that way.

I have no kids, so made it clear I am happy to be flexible with those that do. Seems to have gone down well.

With my very limited experience, I would say it is very much DO dependant. If you are not employed yet not sure how you would find this out...
Life is what you make it.......I make mine my own.

Hi all

So happy! Got my Offer of Employment email today :) And a starting date for next week so really made up!
My journey started out in April this year and I have had similar ups and downs with previous applications for roles I have applied for and not got the position like some others on here. All I can say is, if you really want to do the job, then hang on in there and like me you will get there!

Cant wait for next week!

Also many thanks to people on here, including mods who have commented and given advice. It really is appreciated!

I hope I can do the same for others in the future
