The PSNI is investigating a postal van hijacking in West Belfast.

A postal worker was removing items from the rear of the van in Ross Road at around 10.30am yesterday morning when he was approached by a man armed with a knife.

The hijacker forced the employee to walk away from the van before driving off in it.

Police keen to trace armed man who hijacked postal van in West Belfast prompting security alert

Police have released a description of a man who hijacked a postal van armed with a knife, which later prompted a security alert in West Belfast.

A postal worker was removing items from the rear of the van in Ross Road at around 10.30am when he was approached by a man armed with a knife.

The hijacker forced the employee to walk away from the van before driving off in the vehicle.

The van was later located in Valleyside Close prompting a security alert that lasted for several hours, with many residents forced out of their homes on Springfield Road.

Detective Inspector Peter Mullan said: "The hijacker is described as in his mid 20's, about 5' 6" tall and skinny. He spoke with a local accent.

"He was wearing a black hooded top, possibly with a logo on the chest, and red knee length football type shorts.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who can identify the male, or anyone who witnessed the hijacking or the vehicle being abandoned. The number to call is 101."
