How much notice do I need to give

Hi, I've worked for Royal Mail for 35 years. I've had enough and want to resign before December. How much notice do I have to give? I can't ask anyone because it will be repeated back to the manager and I want to keep it confidential for now. Thanks to anyone who knows. I can't find my original contract

If I understand things correctly, anyone who resigns is not regarded as a "good leaver" and they will not get to keep their SIP shares.

If the above is correct, for a full timer especially, it would be well worth holding out another ~12 months so that ownership of the shares issued to us in 2013 transfers over. I believe you would still lose the extra shares issued after October 2013, but by far most of them were allocated in that first wave, if I recall correctly .

Put it in writing with the date of presentation of the letter and the date you wish to leave - keep a copy and give it to the office manager, not an assistant. Whilst you are only required to give one week, two may be better for the following reasons
A) You will ensure the DOM has more than enough time to process it and can't make any excuses about not having had time.
B) You will enjoy the countdown more as if I guess correctly, you want to go as "pressure" starts around mid to end of November.
C) If like I had, you have done your route for a long time, it will give you more time to say goodbye to customers you got on well with.

It's a good time to go, I loved my first Christmas looking through the window from the warm side and am looking forward to the next one even more, and after 35 years you deserve a good one - good luck and a very happy Christmas :)

Why don't you ask for voluntary redundancy ?

given the 35 years loyal & dedicated service already given to royal mail, they would deem it cheaper & better to kill him/her off rather than pay them off
the shares would be an issue, but if you can live with the risk of not gaining around 3k next year (maybe)
