A man behind a string of Post Office armed robberies is facing an extra 10 years in jail after the Court of Appeal extended his sentence.

Peter Dentith, of South Street, Longsight, was jailed for a series of armed robberies in June 2013.

He was originally sentenced to six years and four months in jail, however the Court of Appeal has now increased this to life imprisonment.

Dentith’s sentence was referred to the court under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme by the Attorney General, Jeremy Wright QC MP.

Mr Wright said the original term failed to reflect the seriousness of Dentith’s crime. He welcomed the decision by the court on Tuesday.

Mr Wright said: “I asked the Court of Appeal to look again at this sentence as I believe the original term failed to reflect the seriousness of the offences I am therefore pleased that the Court of Appeal has increased the sentence and I hope this brings a degree of comfort to the victims of these terrible crimes.”

Dentith arrested and jailed with two others as the result of a major police investigation - Operation Felix - following a string of armed post office robberies.

Police launched the operation following raids which they believed were linked on Shaw Hall Road post office at Hyde in March and June 2012.

Officers carried out an armed raid on a car after a surveillance team watched as three men repeatedly drove past the post office.

Dodson and Dentith were arrested, but the third man managed to escape. A pistol, balaclavas and gloves were recovered from the car.

When Dentith’s house was searched police recovered a jacket and a blue crash helmet. The jacket was identical to one worn by one of the gang during the armed robbery at the post office in June.

It was discovered that the crash helmet had originally been bright red but had been painted blue. It matched a helmet worn in the armed robbery on the post office in March.

Dentith’s DNA was found on the balaclava and fibres from this were also found inside the crash helmet worn by the pillion passenger.
