If you tell our DOM that you can't complete in the time you just get told you are lazy and xyz could easily complete it! And so the argument's begin! :arrrghhh

The good one is when as a reserve , Your taking out a walk you don't know, which you ve had to prep ( and the duty holder usually comes in at least 45 minutes early)

and you tell the DOM due to unfamiliarity with the round, Time taken to prep. and the fact that you came in on time not Early, you might find it difficult to complete.

The stock answer is, Well the duty holder always finishes it Early

Two points:

1) I would expect any Duty Holder to complete a Duty quicker than a Reserve. Simply because he should be more familiar
with it.

2) If you don't want to use your credit to phone the Office, reverse the call: Use R-E-V-E-R-S-E on the key pad. :cuppa

Just tell the gaffer you will be working to your time and if you know that you are going to go over, then tell them you don't want to. Tell them before you leave the office at the very latest, and ask them: So what are you gonna do about it?? Take a few loops off? Leave some of the packets perhaps? If the manager wants you to take all your mailing out with you and ring the office later. Dont be awkward in saying it costs money, just ring them with the good news that 3 bags of mail will be coming back to the office with you. You are quite within your rights to work your hours and nothing more.

Sorted!!

Sometimes managers give you additional pressures to take out the work, the usual argy bargy stuff, and I just turn round and tell them, well it wasn't me that made all these duties fecking huge so that when you use your trolleys and knock next door to get rid of packets, you haven't got time to complete. And if you are that insistent on me working overtime on most days of the week then why can't you just up my weekly hours to a more reasonable 45 instead of 39? That usually shuts them up.

And Im not a trouble causer nor militant. I get respect not just from other posties for sticking to my guns, but from managers as well, because they don't want to see posties rushing round finishing early. They might not appreciate me leaving some of the mail behind in the short term, but in the long term it will stop them from making the duties any bigger than they need to be, and creating even more daily problems of lapsed duties. If you think that our jobs are much harder now (and I do remember the days when we had 2nd deliveries for years), imagine what managers think of their jobs now? Having to go out on deliveries, worrying about getting all the lapsing covered, enough vans for posties etc etc They never had to worry about any of that years ago
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Once or twice I've told them i'm cutting off but then while out delivering, every customer has been in and I've got round ahead of my normal time.
I've even cut off and yet still went over my time.

It's far too unpredictable to estimate when you're going to get finished in this job.

I think its better not to get into a discussion. They all try, just leave your packets, but take the tracked and specials and its only such a time you should have time to complete and then theres the commitment to deliver nonsense,I just say lets not make it personal and if its a performance issue, theres a process to follow, I will leave so much or I can bring stuff back, I don't make excuses as to why I will be finishing on my time and I avoid getting into an argument. It gets easier with practice.

As i've posted before. If you are going to be compared to x y and z then offer yourself for testing and also x y and z to find out possibly what your doing wrong or what could be improved and most importantly what x y and z do that is so different from you.
If they come in early, well that would need stopping. If they dont use a trolly, well that would need starting. Assuming you do the job correctly the comparrison is void and one manangers would not really want to highlight for fear of having to hold back their runners.
It is grossly unfair to compare you to x y or z, without finding out what differences if any exist.
Comparrisons can only ever be made on blind tests or maths exams.
Blind tests identify differences and raise questions, maths exams assume that of the 12 apples Sue has everybody wants an equal share not why she has the apples or if she is willing to share, or when she gets home her mum goes mental because she has come home with 4 apples when she told her to put them in the bin because they were off.

Hopefully i've made the point, differences exist and in order to fairly compare we need to start fom a level playing field.

LOL - yes you made the point well.

Its not a science.

Point remains though - where is the line to be drawn between that which is genuine and that which is taking the urine.

You mentioned maths - I reckon it comes down to probabilties TBH, age and disabilities notwithstanding.

How many offices have managers that are still at work, when people phone up saying that they cannot complete, using the training that they have had on the PDA ?
None, I hear you say !!
Who answers the phones in this case ?
Indoor staff, I hear you say !!
So who does the work that now cannot be covered ?
Not the indoor staff, surely ?
No !!!!
Maybe it's the little lapdogs who are being paid to lock up the building while the managers are at home.
How many hours are they being paid I hear you ask ?
NONE !!
Because they've already been paid to lock up. So why go out and do some real work.
So what happens to the uncovered deliveries I hear you ask ?
THEY GET DELIVERED THE FOLLOWING DAY.

so they get delivered the next day, nothing wrong with that as long as it has been reported correctly, if you don't have enough time to do your job then follow the correct procedures and you will not have anything to worry about
