hi , I would like to ask as an individual about overtime , I am a relatively new postman with the vision of going to work at my starting time and going home at my finishing time . I do not work my day off and I do not wish to work overtime . Is this a problem at royal mail ? Am I well within my rights to do this ?

You are well within your rights, but you have to treat the job more properly than others when you say you won't complete on heavy days that means no running about on lighter days to make time, otherwise your argument loses credibility.

Some flexibility i.e. 30mins over to complete if and when you can is a decent goodwill gesture also.

would I be correct in presuming that when you say running about on lighter days means , if its not so much of a busy day you do it quicker to get finished quicker ? I would do the job as I do it every day , not really my doing if its a lighter day . I wouldn't mind sitting in the canteen until my finishing time .
Flexibility , is that the 30 mins that can be used once in a five day period ?

Overtime is not compulsory. And as for the 30 mins flexibility this is voluntary.

Is there any written info on this as I have never received a new contract after being made fulltime , although I did ask several times but no sign of one .

As far as I know any new contract is sent out direct to your home address by HR.

The rulings/agreements that appertain to our contracts are available in downloads and from the CWU site for Union members.

I would advise you to inform your manager that you are not available to do OT. That is perfectly within the right of any employee in the land.
This gives them the opportunity to work around you by arranging for example prep of your frame on a busy day meaning you get out on delivery earlier, or for someone to do your cutoff on a busy day.

You should never use the term 'cutoff' as it is inflamatory apparently so you should always talk about 'working to your time'.

You need to be consistent and never be talked into going over as this will mean they will just nag at you every busy day to go over knowing that you can be talked into it. Yes on a light day you might finish early and as you say you go back to the office and either tidy your frame or do whatever your LM wants ie deliver a few packets or a bundle of mail.

A word of warning, generally if you work to your time everyday and leave work in your frame you can get a hard time. You will need to stand your ground when put under pressure. You will be told things like 'so and so can complete today why can't you?' or 'we will haver to look at your performance' or 'if you leave mail it's a sackable offence'. All of that is BS. If you get any of that sort of treatment tell tell them you are being harassed and make a note of what happened each day in a diary. You might need to make an official complaint eventually and your dated diary will be a godsend.

All in all it is FAR easier to just go over and book OT on busy days (or possibly MOST days if your round is too big) but you don't have to and it's a managers job to work around that. That is what they are paid for. But they generally are too lazy to do their job properly so would rather give you a hard time. Don't stand for it but most of all don't let them stress you out. It's just a job. GOOD LUCK!

thanks everyone that has replied , I appreciate all the input . I can understand why overtime occurs , the time allocated to a duty or duties seem to be way off on some but not others .
I wouldn't understand if my performance was brought into the equation especially if the workload increases which imo it is , I can only do what I can do and my performance hasn't been mentioned any time before . I seem to be becoming more exhausted throughout the week , I feel the workload I have is sufficient and working overtime and days off doesn't quite make me feel better . I certainly shouldn't feel pressured into working overtime but if that is going to be the case when I am within my rights not to do it then possibly a career change may be on the horizon , don't really want to do that but don't want any pressure or stress put onto me , is that to much to ask ?

You don't have to work overtime at all mate. I agree, 39 hrs a week is more than enough, it's a tiring job, don't feel pressured into working over, just say that all you want is to work your hrs no more no less. Sometimes they expect royal mail to be your life. Work to live not the other way around. Be polite, but it's well within your rights to work to time ALL the time. Gl with it.
