Actually there are 2 main reasons why you should tell Royal Mail.
The first is that they have a legal responsibility to keep track of the hours you work, and that the correct rest breaks are taken. (not meal relief's but the longer ones between finishing and starting work). If they fail to do this without reasonable excuse they leave themselves open to prosecution under various H&S statutes.
The other, and more important reasons is that it is a contractual requirement of your employment. If you fail to honour that part of the contract then they can, in the worst circumstance, dismiss you. It would be entirely legal to do so and would be seen as a reasonable action by an ET.
