Royal Mail to introduce new fees for insufficient postage

Royal Mail is introducing a new fee of £1.50 for a letter with insufficient postage, and £2 where nothing has been paid.

A flat fee of £3 will apply to a small parcel, with the new charges coming in on Monday.

Royal Mail said the new charges were simpler, adding that surcharge handling fees have not changed for a decade despite rising costs.

Under the current structure, the surcharge is £1, plus any remaining postage due.

The changes are not expected to increase the average amount a typical household pays in surcharges in a year, said Royal Mail.

Stephen Agar, managing director of consumer and network access at Royal Mail, said: "Surcharging customers is the last thing Royal Mail wants to do. We make it as easy as possible for senders to attach the appropriate postage to their letters. The vast majority of consumers get it right most of the time.

"On the occasions where they don't, the surcharge helps to cover the extra cost of handling items that have been underpaid or have no postage attached."

What extra costs? It is just absorbed into all the other work we do in deliveries..........still waiting for them to put in the short handled brooms for us to sweep the streets too.

That's a typical RM statement. State something blatantly false and hope some people believe it to be true. How can they say that increasing the charge on underpaid letters by almost 50p each will not cause an increase?

They would look less like idiots if they just told the truth: 'There has been no increase in many years despite rising costs and we do not expect this to increase the average amount a typical household pays by much.'

Oh yeah. It's the same people who state that delivering to neighbours takes no extra time to do!

It's a nice easy way to make RM some cash! 'handling fee' ha ha, makes me laugh, its handed into the office to be surcharged. Of course its us poor posties who will get the brunt of the customer anger but I find it funny when they come running out with a surcharge card thinking its a 739! Not so keen on trying to explain to them its not a 739 though, most don't seem to get it!!!

I point at the big writing on the top about an under paid item and read it aloud to them very slowly. Works every time.

How come this is the first I've heard of this ?
We had wtl this week too, and nothing was said
