Royal Mail launches annual campaign to recruit over 19,000 temporary workers for Christmas

As in previous years, seasonal workers are being sought by Royal Mail to help sort the Christmas post. They will support Royal Mail’s 123,000 permanent postmen and women who sort and deliver the mail all year round.

Around 19,000 seasonal roles are available across the UK in Royal Mail and Parcelforce Worldwide, primarily to help sort the additional Christmas volumes. Positions are available from mid-November through until early January 2015.

Royal Mail will recruit around 14,000 workers across its core network in England, 1,340 in Scotland, 560 in Wales and 550 in Northern Ireland. Royal Mail Group’s express parcels business, Parcelforce Worldwide, is also recruiting around 2,600 extra people, including drivers.

The recruitment programme is part of Royal Mail’s substantial financial investment in additional resources at Christmas to help ensure we provide the best possible postal service to our customers throughout the UK.

Temporary positions across a variety of shifts will be available between mid-November through to early January 2015. The peak of the additional temporary work will be in the busiest month of December. The majority of seasonal positions will support Royal Mail’s 123,000 permanent postmen and women, who sort and deliver the mail all year round. Parcelforce Worldwide is also looking for drivers and indoor workers as the whole organisation gears up to deliver at Christmas.

Helping to sort the post
Around 14,000 people are needed to work in mail, distribution centres and data centres across England, 1,340 in Scotland, 560 in Wales and 550 in Northern Ireland. The recruits will help to sort Christmas cards and parcels before they go to around 1,400 Delivery Offices for postmen and women to take out on their rounds. Royal Mail Group’s express parcels business, Parcelforce Worldwide, is also recruiting around 2,600 extra drivers and sorting staff throughout the UK.

Every Christmas, we make a substantial commitment in additional resources to handle the festive mailbag, including the recruitment of thousands of temporary workers.”

Heard a rumour that nothing to be put in to assist us on deliveries this year, no extra vans, no nights, no nothing. Can fill the bloody mail centres all they like, no good if they have nobody to deliver it all. The good will has left the building I'm afraid to say. The vast majority in our office do no overtime at all, ever.

I know we're having 3 extra vans this year, as we do every year but this year I'm not convinced there will be anyone to drive them! All the duty holder drivers are saying they will not work their day off this year, as they have in the past, myself included. days are too long now, I need my rest day!

Our office already decimated with people on long term sickness and people on light duties, every time we advertise for new staff they last about 2 weeks then go. Just like every year enough people set on to sort mail to send out to delivery offices and no one to deliver. I,m expecting more people to go on the sick this Christmas, everyone fed up and moral at all time low.

We've got high sickness levels,vacancies for at least 5 full time jobs,but they are not being advertised nor are people being made up,like other's morale is rock bottom and we are already starting to feel the strain of increasing parcels,what a way to run a company.
