Hello, have been a postman (driver) recently had to give it up for family reasons - reapplied went for the interview but was unable to read the number plate.
I was asked to read a plate from an angle - the distance I couldn't step out as it would have meant walking over the roofs of cars (sloping car park) - when I walked to my left so the car plate was directly in front of me I had no problem but the manager guy said I had failed. After he had gone I paced the distance which came to 29 now I'm tall & I did stride out so I'm guessing that distance would have been around the 30yd mark.
I do ware glasses & have my eyes checked every year same old prescription each year so no deteriation
Anyway enough of my bleating but does anyone know the official distance RM require you to read a number plate from?
Cheers
Just dug out my drivers manual - p96 says 20.5m (67ft)
The other thing this manager said was I had to be able to read a plate @ 8 car lengths - would that be using 8 super minis or 8 large estates - think I've been done.
Have emailed the myappliction team with my concerns - no reply.

Re: Eye test @ the interview
As a newbie employed as a driving postperson, this is new to me - didn't get taken out to read a number plate at all at the interview!
But am expecting it when it comes to doing my driving changeover.
Govt. website says 20 metres.
Are you applying for a role that involves driving LGV's or something?

Re: Eye test @ the interview
Even at a normal pace of 30 inches - its still over the 20m guideline.
However, its not clear from the description you give as to the reason you couldn't read it. If it was obscured by other vehicles, glare from the sun, street furniture etc, then it was best to point that out at the time, and I would mention it in an email.
If however, you have to stand directly in front of a number plate to be able to read it for medical reasons, then that would bring into question your peripheral vision and it might be worth getting it checked out. Part of the reason for the number plate reading test is to test your field of vision.
Reading a number plate from an oblique angle is obviously not part of the test, but neither does it have to be directly ahead
