Re: Why do people come in early?!
What do they actually do when they come in early? Half the time the mech isn't ready that early and the flats and packets are already being sorted by the ones paid to come in early.

Re: Why do people come in early?!
See this is a problem with having different rules & agreements in different DO's as I don't think people coming in early is as big a deal in one of my local DO's as it seems to be for some of you elsewhere.
I know of a few that come in say 30 mins - 1 hour earlier than their listed start time knowing that they'll finish 30 minutes - 1 hour earlier than their listed finish time. They're still working their correct hours & they're still doing the same work they'd be doing anyway, just earlier. Doesn't have an effect on their lapsing/extras either as manager knows how the partners operate & are content as he knows their walks are pretty well balanced & that they're not exactly the type that would drag their heels just to avoid taking a 15 minute bit of lapsing if they know they'll be finished early... nor are they the type to bust their balls just to try & get the whole walk done if it's stewed.
Also I've never heard of anyone coming in early or working beyond their time & not claiming that time. I've heard of people having problems claiming, but ultimately they've no comeback. I'd a problem claiming an hour with a manager & I told him if there's anytime in the future he doesn't want to pay out any overtime I'm willing to work, I'll be more than happy to bring loops/bulk back & leave it sitting somewhere for his convenience. Needless to say, I've never had him take me up on that offer & been paid on time every time since.

Re: Why do people come in early?!
Yes and No!
We have a couple of days of mail being late this week; Mail Centre problem and truck breaking down. Those that came early will not be working exactly the same hours.
Like I have said previously, we have part timers coming in before at least some full timers and in at least one case the full timer is still finishing before the part timers (part timers as a whole - he has an easier round and comes in on his time). He gets paid 7.48hrs and part timers gets 6.30hrs; does that make sense!
The other thing about the flexi-time approach is that the manager should not and most will not pay overtime if you are still within your contractual hour; so if you come in 1 hour early and you only make up 15 minutes; it is tough!
big sigh!

Re: Why do people come in early?!
See your DO must work differently, all CSS operations are handled in house with a night shift running & Mail Centre sending down lorries every couple of hours during night with the last dispatch due at 7am usually containing the last few drips of mail from MC. Which would be the very earliest I'd have ever seen any of them in, which is roughly 1 hour early. They'd still have more than an hours work firing in 1st tray(s) of sequenced, buddy trays, packets etc, it truly would be an exceptional circumstance for a lorry breaking down & delaying them to the point were they'd be sitting around waiting on things.chrisj wrote:Yes and No!

Now this I'd completely agree would cause a problem, whereas in the examples of early starters I'm talking about I don't feel is causing a problem as nothing is being lost or gained by RM. This would be a problem & if it is the case I'd understand why you'd be upset. Are you sure this is the case though, are you sure they actually aren't getting paid any OT in your DO?chrisj wrote:Like I have said previously, we have part timers coming in before at least some full timers and in at least one case the full timer is still finishing before the part timers (part timers as a whole - he has an easier round and comes in on his time). Disagree here, if someones official hours are say 8 - 2 & they come in at 7 with the intention of finishing at 1, if say for example it's heavy & they stay out till 1:30, they should be able to claim that 30 minutes. Assuming the only reason for taking 30 minutes longer than usual is the fact it was heavy & not something like a late arrival from mail centre as you say. If a manager had sense he'd pay it out as well, your staff are less likely to help you out if you refuse to work with them.chrisj wrote:The other thing about the flexi-time approach is that the manager should not and most will not pay overtime if you are still within your contractual hour; so if you come in 1 hour early and you only make up 15 minutes; it is tough!

Then again, maybe some are happy to let it slip for a day as perhaps they're making more than the difference between unofficial/official start times per day when they finish.. if that sentence makes sense.

I'll let others reply to this part of your reply or response. Your office and manager appears very accommodating and we do not have a night shift; I think a lot of offices do not have night shift except for the SPDOs or very large offices. Only 2 Mail Centre deliveries in the morning!Disagree here, if someones official hours are say 8 - 2 & they come in at 7 with the intention of finishing at 1, if say for example it's heavy & they stay out till 1:30, they should be able to claim that 30 minutes. Re: Why do people come in early?!
If someone comes in early without being told to then that is voluntary and they cannot expect to paid overtime for that period.ThatsNotPlumb wrote: Disagree here, if someones official hours are say 8 - 2 & they come in at 7 with the intention of finishing at 1, if say for example it's heavy & they stay out till 1:30, they should be able to claim that 30 minutes. Also if there official hours are 8 till 2 and they complete all the work within contracted hours, including starting early then no overtime is due either.
You only get paid overtime with the authorisation of your manager, if you work early without his authorisation you won't get paid. Similarly if you complete a delivery within your contracted hours, irrespective of any voluntary overtime, then no overtime is due.
If they want the hour between 7 and 8 paid then they need to get the managers authorisation. If they want the 30 minutes extra at the end of the delivery then they shouldn't start early and expect to finish early/on time/

Re: Why do people come in early?!
I don't really know the manager to be honest, he isn't my manager, I'm sure if you asked 10 different people they'd all give you different impressions of him. I know a couple of people under him haven't had problems getting paid overtime & I know they do occasionally come in 30 mins - 1 hour early. They could have an arrangement with him though regarding early starts I'm not sure.chrisj wrote:I'll let others reply to this part of your reply or response. I believe the night shift operation at my DO is purely for the CSS operation alone regarding their breaks/2 hours on/off system etc & as a result MC arrivals come periodically during night to fill break covering staff's time.

Re: Why do people come in early?!
I presume that there is some sort of arrangement between the manager & the few I've seen in quite early. A few of them are quite overtime friendly ie working day off/other sorts of shifts &, well to me, it wouldn't make sense if you are say due to work 6 hours, end up working 7 for whatever reason & then have the manager refuse to pay out because you started early. If you'd any sense it would only need to happen to you once before you learned your lesson.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:If someone comes in early without being told to then that is voluntary and they cannot expect to paid overtime for that period.

Re: Why do people come in early?!
What gets me is guys getting it tight for coming in early (which I think is wrong) from the bullies and those same pr**s not taking their break especially on a Saturday.. Flying out the door at least a hour quicker than Monday to Friday...So just as bad for me its live and let live...Certainly would not chastise anyone for it

Re: Why do people come in early?!
There's a lot of hypocritical people in general. Complain about people coming in early, not taking break(s), not using trolley etc & others "running" round their duty then Saturday comes & everyone's finished well before their time.. yet the rest of the week they conveniently finish bang on their time.P739 wrote:What gets me is guys getting it tight for coming in early (which I think is wrong) from the bullies and those same pr**s not taking their break especially on a Saturday.. All as bad as each other.

Re: Why do people come in early?!
We should point out at this juncture, that management are perfectly aware of the proper picture but it suits them to pretend that they are not. Hence why RM never makes anything beyond a very token attempt at getting staff to adhere to correct start times.buzzboy wrote:I pretty much agree that coming in early (unpaid overtime) just makes things worse for everybody because while it looks like you and everybody else are coping your just creating a false impression and leads to less new staff . Its best to do things by the book so that management get the proper picture .

Answer = twats. I cover for a few twats who come in early. So when you come in at the RIGHT time you end up looking slow compared to these twats who come in early and get out early. T W A T S. Should all be shot.
